: Hot Look or Originality
tim68rsss Aug 23rd, 05, 05:57 AM Restoring an all original #s matching 68 RSSS BB. I'm getting ready to purchase wheels and tires for this car. I have started accumalating the date coded wheels but probably won't have found them all by the time I need them. Not that the 14x7 original wheels don't look good, I just think the bigger tires and wheels on the back and front set the Camaro off. Everyone around me says to stay original. What do you guys think?
JoshC Aug 23rd, 05, 06:01 AM If I had a numbers matching car, I would go back to original. Unfortunately I do not, so custom it is. You could always do both, with the rims/tires. Save the originals for shows and such. Probably a good option if you have a place to store them.
blue ss Aug 23rd, 05, 07:09 AM Because you see more of the( hot look) cars I would say the # matching original style would realy be hot! Stay original there isnt many #s match.
It is harder to be authentic, Thats what makes it cool. Just imo
JimM Aug 23rd, 05, 07:52 AM If you're gonna drive it for fun, do both. Modern 16 or 17" wheels and good rubber will make a huge difference on the road.
Rich S Aug 23rd, 05, 10:03 AM Cars are a matter of taste. You should do what you like and enjoy. Nothing you are contemplating is permanent or irreversible.
What good is a car that you're afraid to touch, let alone drive? Why build a car according to what someone else will think of it? If total resto turns you on, do it. If you want a double-throw-down monster, do it. Drive the thing, get the big smile on your face when you walk away from those rice rockets and gutless vettes, and enjoy what God has enabled you to possess.
Maybe if you sell it someday, those other things will be worries. Deal with it then.
William Aug 23rd, 05, 11:24 AM A 1968 Camaro SS would have had 14" x 6" wheels. 1969 was the first year for 7" wheels.
tim68rsss Aug 23rd, 05, 03:02 PM William,
You are right, they should be 14x6 XN code. I'm thinking two sets. Thanks for the input guys.

Uncle Tupelo Aug 25th, 05, 06:29 AM I have a numbers matching 40K original mileage 67 RS. I have the original wheels and caps that came on the car in the garage, but I have rally wheels on the car. I kept the originals so I would always have them, but prefer the look of the rallys!
So I guess my opinion would be to put on the car what you think looks best, and have the originals if you ever wanted to show it as an original car.
CamarosRus Aug 25th, 05, 02:55 PM With wheels and tires being so easy to change and not effecting any other issues on the car I'd have BOTH..........and use something day 2 looking or period correct like Cragars or American's etc etc..........
I myself am not a fan of 17" wheels on 1st Gen Camaros unless its an all out Pro Touring Car , but not on an otherwise stock restored /survivor Camaro
