I just installed a OER reproduction 8000k tach in my 69 camaro. I have the accel hei ignition coil system. The tach now reads 1000 rpms constatnly even when the car is not running. The brown wire runs from the tach to the tach side of the distributor. The pink wire goes to the 12 volt side of the tach to a constant hot. The black wire then goes to a a good ground and the ground on the tach. Any suggestions on why this is happening, or any fixes?. I have a fear that this will not work with the HEI setup...and this was not cheap. Any help would be great. Thanks

Do you have an MSD system on it too? I have an hei distributor on mine along with an msd 6A.

No it is a plain accel hei coil that sits in the dist. cap.

Ok, you have the tach (brown wire) side hooked up correctly and also the ground (black wire). The hot (pink wire) should NOT be hooked up to a constant hot. Hook it up to the hot side of your ignition so it is only hot while the key is on. Try that and see what it does. I'm doing this from memory and my memory isn't so good anymore. My hei had been converted over to work with an MSD system. Let me know if it works for ya

Also some tachometers will 'stick' at whatever RPM the car was at when power to the tach was off. Most stock gauges I don't believe do this, however the one in a 89 Camaro I know for sure does.
Does it read correctly when driving?

no. It stays at 1000 rpms consistently

the tach now works but it is 1000 rpm's off. When the key is turned to the on position the tach immediately jumps to 1000 rpm's when car is not running. When the car is running the tach idles at 1900 rpm and will fluctuate when gas is depressed. Any idea on how to calibrate this tach?
