View Full Version : 10 second Plymouth K-Car. Is this possible?

Below is a link to a story about how a guy that owns an 80's Plymouth K-car and ran mid 10's in the 1/4 mile. I ran across this story while surfing the net and find it rather amazing. I used to have an 85 Reliant K-car and believe me, that thing was as slow as molassas. God knows I loved it so (Gas milage was a Dream), but that thing at top speed went about 70 mph "and that was going downhill with a strong wind behind me"
Check this out and tell me if what this guys saying is possible. http://www.thedodgegarage.com/the_reliant.html
pdq67 Aug 25th, 05, 06:08 AM As stupid as this sounds, didn't they make some stock, Turbo, "K-Cars" back then that ran like a Bat??
Wasn't Carol Shelby himself the Mastermind of their production??

I suppose if you hooked it up to a 9 second Camaro, it may run a 10 second quarter. :)
Scott Taylor Aug 25th, 05, 08:43 AM With enough horse power you can make a referigerator run 10 second quarters.
Eric Kammerer Aug 25th, 05, 09:06 AM Garfield, my guess is your K-car didn't have a turbo motor. I checked it out, and it looks plausible. 33 PSI of boost and a relatively large 4 banger will move a light car like that okay. Sure would be emabrassing to be spanked by a K-car though.
William van Hulst Aug 25th, 05, 09:16 AM Well, anything is possible, but those skinny tires all around dont prove to me he could have had enough traction. I would also wonder about stability with a vehicle lite enough and with that wheelbase and a 4 cyl for traction weight. Of course a turbo turns on later, but that eats up part of your 1/4 dont it? Yes I also looked at the FRONT tires.
DjD Aug 25th, 05, 09:45 AM It's front wheel drive and the rear tires are skinny but you really can't tell how wide the fronts are or if they are drag radials or not. If the car is light enough for the power to weight ratio needed to run 10's it will do it. There are imports doing it every day...
camaroman7d Aug 25th, 05, 11:21 AM If you look at the lower picture, you can see the front tires are pretty narrow as well. This will not cause a problem in this situation because if you look at the 60ft times, you can see it doen't leave all that hard. Another thing to look at is the mph for the ET. 132MPH is a lot of MPH for a 10.41ET (typical of turbo cars). A typical drag car can run 10.40's @ 125-128MPH, but the difference is they will 60ft a lot better than that car.
I don't doubt the guy or his car. Give credit where credit is due. He has a fast K-car, maybe he will trade you for your 1st gen Camaro, LOL.
novaderrik Aug 25th, 05, 11:23 AM anyone remember that 10 second mid 80's Dodge Caravan from a couple of years ago? they guy drove to the track, put the slicks on the front (while everyone pointed and laughed), and proceeded to get booted from the track for going too fast for his lack of safety gear. just a turbo 2.5 liter with lots of boost and go-fast parts from the Mopar Perfromance catalog.
if a k car based minivan could do it, then why not an actual K car?
and the little pocket rocket K car that Shelby had his fingers in was the Omni GLH- so called because it Goes Like Hell. well, high 14's was going like hell i nthe 80's, i guess
i guess Carrol Shelby himself named that car.
