I have a few questions about computers b/c I know nothing about them so here goes.

First, at work we recently moved across town and now my office computer started locking up DEAD, so much so that IT went black screen. I started it back up and then again. It worked fine before the move! What gives?

Anyway, They redid it in about 5 or so hours yesteday morning AND all of a sudden, I can't access google or yahoo's search windows?? I can everything in the windows, but not the search type-in windows??

They are going to get me a different "BOX" tomorrow...

Now at home, why does it take 3 or 4 tries for me to hook up to the web? And then typing in yahoo's search window, I have to wait a bit or what I type disappears as it clicks onto another identical window and I have to retype it, why??

try hitting the "any" key and see what happens.

Updates are important. Windows, along with your virus and anti-spyware programs. And run them often to keep it clean. Theres so much sht out there on the internet its easy to get something that will easily mess up your comp.

If its really messed up, there are places that will clean it up and get it back working right again. One of my really good friends does this kind of work, and you wouldnt believe how many comps he gets in that are crazy infected with spyware and viruses, and theyre completely unaware. With mine, I just do what he tells me (updates and keeping up with the spy/virus programs). Gave mine to him to fix when the hard drive broke, and when he went through it, it was completely clean after more than a year that Ive had it. He was pleasantly surprised.

Nova,

I hope that was a joke b/c the place I work at has four full time Tech's to work on AND keep running all the computers they have and they are scratching their heads UNLESS I have been deemed a "Bad-boy" and somebody turned the switch on that screwed everything up AND they have been told not to clue me in. (And fwiw, everything else works EXCEPT time idling/wasting surfing!)..

And they do have a COMPLETE "Big-Brother" Security function Too!! No sh-t..

Every key-stroke can AND has in the past been monitored too..

That's why before we moved, I walked up to the Public Library and webbed here for 15 minutes each "noon-30 minutes" when I got the chance so I could hopefully stay under the RADAR Screen sorta deal. B/c Every so often I get on a Political RANT on the Boards!! Can't get to the Library out in the boonies where they stuck us now tho...

pdq, it sounds like they are running a blocking software on your pc. If your pc ran when you unplugged it and didn't run when when you plugged it back in then a piece of hardware loosened up. You don't want to risk your job surfing at work. It sounds like they are watching.

Paul, due to the unbelievable amount of virus's and crap you can "catch" out there on the net, a lot of companies have all but completely banned internet useage at work. All it takes is one virus to sneak in past the firewall and reach a server, and everything shuts down. We just recently had that happen at work...someone opened a personal e-mail and it knocked us dead for hours (thousands of PC's). They have been firing people right and left for getting on the web at work.
Just curious...where did they move you guys too? You was over on Madison, right?

Travis,

Out on East Elm Street now next to Hwy 50 on the south side just east of the SHP headquarters. State Parks is in the east half of our building.

Nova,

They gave me a lap-top that didn't work right this morning, so ended up giving me another machine. Now it works fine AND you wouldn't believe the anti-spy, software we have!! (But they did STOP all Yahoo. e-mail a while back for spy protection too)...

I have to search the web for environmental information everywhere, as well as hit the EPA site and the Gov's CFR site and other State's sites too. And look the news over too to keep up to date on stuff.

I flat out told the Tech's in a nice way, I thought I was a "bad-Boy" and had got myself locked off the web., trying to get them to say yes or no, but they said, no.

Anyway, whatever.. My machine at work, works fine now for who know's how long??
