I have a 68 RS/SS 350 and am trying to find all of the right smog equipment. I have what I think is the original pump (7801149 w/relief valve on top) and two brackets for the pump (orange engine and black adjustment) but I don't think I have the right diverter. My diverter is stamped as 7034475 - it mounts strange and looks nothing like what it should or that I have seen.

I had heard that the SB 68's had an elbow with hose and another bracket that the diverter mounted to over the valve cover - but I also heard that was a BB only. My question is this: what is right and correct?

The car is a December 67 build car - would that make a difference?

Thanks!

I picked up a restored smog pump set-up for my "68" L30/M20. The pump is stamped 7801149 and the diverter valve is stamped 7034481 with an ink stamped FG on the front. I believe the L48 and the L30 had the same set-up but the 327/210 engines were different. Mine has a bracket on the back of the air pump that mounts the diverter valve very close to it, with only a 3 or 4 inch hose connecting the two. Hope this helps RonM.

There is also a Julian assembly date code on these smog pumps.

RonM/Doug,

Thanks for the info! Is there a number for the bracket as well?

Bracket is GM #3917642 and the additional brace is #3951340. These are both in Group 3.655.
You will need a 3/8" (course or 16tpi) by 5 1/4" long bolt for the pump and a 3/8" nut for the end.
There is a small (@3/8"IDx5/8"OD) spacer that is about 1/2" long that goes between the bracket and the water pump at the lower mounting bolt. You can make one from alum if you can't find one in a wrecking yard.
The brackets were also used on Full Size and Chevelle SBC's etc, so look at these in wrecking yards when your scrounging for parts.
Remember that you will also need a two groove Water Pump Pulley and the correct Crank pulley if you don't already have them. These can be found on other models also. Check the pulley listing on the CRG - www.camaros.org - site for the numbers you need.

Hope this helps;

John,
Is one of the two brackets that you speak of for the diverter valve assy itself? I have the two for the smog pump but nothing for the diverter. Is the diverter valve bracket numbered?
Thanks much!

That is the bracket to mount the Diverter Valve - I thought that was your question?
My bad on the original part number though - I looked it up in the assembly manual and it is given as #3917646 not 2 - but, I can't find a reference to the '646' number in my master parts book - I guess only the '642' number was available over-the-counter?
I rarely see numbers stamped on the parts - sometimes a date or vendor code or mark.

Again - these brackets were used on lots of applications - not just Camaros... Go parts crawlin' at you favorite wrecking yard that has a good selection of 60's cars/trucks and you will find them.
I've gotten to where I pull A.I.R parts off now if I find them. Don't have a bracket in the box for you - I looked...

My '68 is an Auto and doesn't use the A.I.R. system.

Hope this helps;

Just for yuks I dragged ou the box today and looked for any stamped marks...
Only the main AIR pump bracket has a cast number on it (note: I would have sworn this bracket was fabricated - until I looked at it today, it's a one piece casting - I'm getting old...) The cast number is 387748(or 9?)6 - sorry, no matter how well I clean and check the second to last number on the main bracket I can't read it... There is also a cast in "GM" and a stamped "3".
These parts were off a 1967 350SS. Calif. car.

If any off the markings were 'inked on' - they are long gone...

John,
Outside of Greenhoe and those type of people - do you know anyone who would have a bunch of smog parts for sale?

If anyone is interested, I have a 7034481 valve I restored (cleaned, polished and painted, did not open to check diaphram, I have a non functioning smog system). I'm looking to trade for a 69 BB valve. I believe that part # ends with a 297.
If you look on MacNeish's site, he has a 7034481 valve on his white 68, so I guess that would be correct.

I got my stuff from Bill Hodel, he is a great guy to do business with in my opinion. Give him a call ( 330-832-0871 ), see if he has what you need. Hope this helps, RonM.

Sorry - RonM - I'll give him a call.

Z10Joey - Do you have the elbow and brackets with that valve?

I don't know anyone that deals in "bunches" of parts - but, I did put a couple calls out yesterday to people that can/have supplied me with the parts I've needed for a given job in the past.
I'll let you know if I find a major player...
If you need a part or two - post it here and I, as well as, others can ask around and maybe find it.
Some of this stuff is getting silly as far as prices.
The parts were available over the counter from many years as service parts from GM/Chevrolet and fit numerous applications in some cases.
Sometimes the service part has a different stamping/marking and, almost always, a different date code on it than the plant assembled part.
So, many of the service parts you are going to find represented as "original" may not be...
Wish I was smart enough to have saved all that stuff 'back-in-the-day'...

John
