On way back from picking up daughter at college, I passed a 1970 Chevelle SS that had just been parked on the highway in front of a guys house. He wasnt home. darn.
Its an SS 396 - 350hp TH-400 3 speed auto on the floor, console, complete with POP and build sheet. all matching numbers. Off the build sheet, I forgot to get the VIN, was 3:31 posi, front disk brakes, ZL2 and ZL3 (cowl hood with pins, and hi perf.) It appears to have leather buckets, interior is mint thru the window. Rear torsion rod across differential, its Black with gray/black type stripe in trunk and hood. It has black vinyl top. New paint and new tires. I didnt open the hood, owner not around but its only 45 miles from me.
Downside after talking to seller on the phone, on short trip last week, a ticking noice started up in the engine. He took it to his uncle a mechanic who said it 'could be wrist pin, cracked piston, flex plate, flywheel' but not sure. So rather than tear into the engine, he decided to sell the car with disclosure of the engine noise. He said without the noise he could get $25K on ebay.
It has non original wheels, new stereo sytem in place of original radio.
He is asking $20K for it. Any of you chevelle guys have an opinion? I wish I had my digital with me on this trip but didnt. I can go back on Sunday if need be, but what a gorgeous car.
Ideas what to look for?
:D
