View Full Version : Be careful what you wish for!!
Well, After waiting one year to get it into the body shop I wanted and then waiting almost seven months to get it back-I am getting it back. Thats the good new.
The bad news is that it is in pieces and sanded down with some of the body work done and need of primer!
The shop I picked has become one of the SEMA show car body shops and everything that came into his shop, and I mean everything, was more important than my car. After asking, begging and you name it he no longer returned my calls until today and admitted that I am, as I suspected, behind two SEMA cars that just have to be done. Also he said it would be about another six months because he will be so behind from the car show stuff. It sounds to me like he really wants my car out of there.
I pick it up next Friday.
I am going to paint it myself. I have painted many cars in the past a long time ago but I bet I can still do it.
To my question:
I need to prime it and start the block sanding proccess. What is the best primer for this. I have not picked the paint brand yet but it will be BC-CC like PPG or ?
Any help or moral support would be great.
Also need a new gun ??? whats good, does not need to be to cheap just good.

You know I would but I did not get a solid "I will have it done" time from him.
He just took advantage of my easy going nature. My nature will not change but my cars location will.
djunod Sep 8th, 05, 01:00 PM I'm pretty easy going in person, so I just went along for the ride with my body guy... we seemed to have become decent friends, but he just didn't work on my car very often... finally he finished the '67 Camaro that he had been working on for 9 years. And then instead of working on my car, another '67 Camaro came into the shop... that's finally when I had the "Heart-2-Heart" talk with him about working on my car. I never got beligerant, nasty or antagonistic about it. I brought it in Aug '04 (just for replacing the rear sheet metal)... I should be taking it home in the next few days... completely painted. So far, I'm glad that we both stuck together on the car :)
JimM Sep 8th, 05, 01:41 PM Ed, last November, I asked the board if I should "paint it myself" they said yes, and I did. Do some reading, a lot has changed since the last time you painted a car. Everything I did and asked is here on the board ready for searching. Also, be sure to read and head the sticky's in body shop, john doyles "how I did it" article was a big inspiration, and srmartins basics series was invaluable, as well as sevt chevelles article on safety.
As for primer, I forget what I used, but it's a ppg product, and one of very few hi-build surfacers that do not contain any isocyanate (read "poison") I'll get back to you on that.
As for "was it worth it?" H*LL YES! Especially when I took 2nd in 60's modified last weekend in a local participant judged show, without an INTERIOR! Ya, it was worth it all right... Check my website, I don't have the "process" part done yet, but the before and after are there.
BonzoHansen Sep 8th, 05, 01:51 PM You will get lots of moral support here! Just reading other people’s posts has me thinking about it more & more. Now every time I walk through the garage, I keep trying to figure out how to make it paint ready. :)
You Can Do It!
And when you do, drive by the body shop and wave! :waving:
RS3SDL2MG Sep 8th, 05, 02:06 PM AHHH post's like this make me feel good , my body shop is alway's open and will work on my car anytime , my car stay's parked in my bodyshop year round ,my bodyman is never to busy to work on my car's (HE'S ME)
seriously I hope you get it fixed soon , paint it yourself , paint and bodywork is not nearly as hard nor is it the brain surgery $million dollar shop's have brainwashed people into thinking ,
I painted my 67 RS last year and cost of material was around $350 to $400 buck's but it was worth it , at a car show in spring before gas got so high we had to park e'm one guy had a 68 chevelle he was bragging about having painted and said it cost $4000 , I said to him I would like to see such a high caliber job and asked him where this jewel was , he said he just lived down the road and I went down to take a look , (I WAS IN MY CAMARO) he looked at my camaro and asked who and how much the paint job was , I told him I painted it myself and it costed four , he said yea same as mine cost , ? I said no mine was not $4K it cost $400 buck's , he never spoke much after that , his chevelle looked pretty good but if that's what you get for $4k I would just primer mine ,,,
GO FOR IT!!!

shoddy_F-body Sep 8th, 05, 04:18 PM I have a few openings if you want to bring it over here. :)
I love this board!! I am almost in tears!! This just what I needed to get me going. I worked my a** off on the rest of this car and I have not even got to hear the motor for about seven months.
I know I can do it, I just wasn't planning on it but now I am.
I am in Lubbock but my daughter,son-in-law and grandbaby live in Spring and I was just there two weeks ago before the new residence from the east had to come to Houston. What a mess. I bought the parts for the body repair from a shop in Houston.
I think it was Camaro Concepts,(Goodmark fr. fender and door skin.
Any suggestions on the spray gun?
I do plan on building a booth in a large metal building in the back of my office.
I have downloaded the article on painting your car yourself and plan on reading it again tonight.
Thanks again to everybody for the support. Some people just don't understand how important this car is to people like us.

We do! :beers:
There was a post running last week on spray guns, also a search will reveal much.

Most heavy-equipment rental places have "explosion proof/hazardous environment" fans and lighting available. The fan I used was a "RamFan" type manhole ventilation fan rated at 800 cfm. You can use it to push (positive pressure) or pull (negative). I vented my standard sized two car garage by pulling the bad air out. There is ducting that attaches to it to redirect fumes and spray where you want it to end up. This fan coupled with an HVLP gun made for very little overspray and mist of the lacquer. I also covered shelving in the garage with "butcher" paper instead of something that could statically charge. I also grounded the chassis to the floor with a chain. Popping for new cartridges in the facepiece is a must too.
I figure all of this costs less in time and money than my medical or home owner's deductibles!
You really can do it. As for me, I went with PPG. Finding a good local supplier and reading this website will give you everything you need!
Good luck!
Dan

ebd Sep 10th, 05, 08:14 AM Quick update:
I went to get all the boxes of new stuff from my car that the bodyshop told me to get or he could not continue the work on my car HA! HA! and the meeting was civil.
The car looked sad but that will all change. I will pick it up next week and move it to where it should have been all along, my garage.
Today I am going to shop for a new paint gun and a new compressor. It looks like it's going to turn out after all. I have started reading everything I can find on this board and getting set up for the arrival of my baby.
It's really kinda fun!!
Now if I can learn how to post pictures I will try to show progress on my car.
Thanks to everyone.

BonzoHansen Sep 10th, 05, 09:11 AM That's great. I want to see pictures. :waving:
Post pics:
1. open account at photobucket.com . Very easy.
2. Post IMG link in thread. Like this, replacing the first * with [

becomes this

ebd Sep 10th, 05, 06:46 PM I will try that when I get it back next Friday.
It looked so sad sitting in that bodyshop seeing all the other cars go in and out.
What a shame!
ebd Sep 14th, 05, 05:01 PM Well I decided to buy the Porter/Cable 60 gal. 220v air comp. at a place called Texas tool here in Lubbock. I think it will be a good one for air body tools and to paint with.
I found a HVLP gun @ Lowes for $99 made buy Ingersol-Rand, Not sure of the spelling,
And it looked pretty good. Any feed back on this? I also liked their touch up gun for $49.
What do you all think?
Thanks
Eldon
djunod Sep 14th, 05, 07:25 PM Don't buy an HVLP gun unless you are required by law to do so in your area.
I don't understand why people aren't popping up with gun recommendations. The Sata RP (non-HVLP version) used to be highly recommended around here... same with the Wacom Geo... both used to be available on e-bay with good buy-it-now prices.
ebd Sep 14th, 05, 09:36 PM OK, now I am confussed! I have been getting the impression that the HVLP gun was the way to go because of the low amount of overspray.
The Sata RP seems to be quite a bit more money which is OK if it is really that much better of a gun.
Which one am I looking for? That is to say 1.3. 1.4 1.6 ??? Digital? Blue????
Help!
Maybe I will get my old syphon DeVilbiss down from the top shelf and rebuild it.(not really)
I guess I don't know the difference between them.
I know the HVLP is high vol. low press. Is the Sata RP a gravity feed? Are they both gravity feed?
Thanks
Eldon
djunod Sep 14th, 05, 11:05 PM 1.3 is the tip I was told to get. When I started asking professional painters in my area, not a one of them would use a HVLP gun or even recommend it.
The Sata lays paint down real smooth... it was real easy for me to get a good results with it. I only painted a couple of front ends so far... my '82 Vette (http://www.makoshark2.com/cars/82corvette/)and my '89 IROC (http://www.makoshark2.com/cars/89camaro/)...
