Did some of the 71 Z's come with the shorter deck spoiler? If so, what determined the shorter version vs. the first year for the taller more elongated version?

Thanks.

Poke around here:

Other Options, equipment, facts: The short one piece rear spoiler was replaced with a 3 piece spoiler (former COPO 9796 used in 1970) in early part of the model year.

One-piece low-profile rear spoiler standard; 3-piece high spoiler (COPO 9796) available optionally after Apr. 20, 1970;

Thanks..........Don't those two statements contradict each other? One says the short one piece spoiler was replaced in early part of the model year. The other says the one piece low profile rear spoiler was standard until after April 20, 1970.

I guess either way the statement indicates that the shorter version was available during some part of production for the 71's. Just seems like I rarely see (I've seen one) the short version on this year Z which is why I asked. So we are sure that some were produced that way?

It confused me a bit too. The stegmiller links might be better. Sounds like only build sheet would verify, as either might be available, at least part of the way through the 71 model year. I couldn't find any kind of cutover date for production. At least in 10 minutes.

Both the short, one piece rear spoiler and the tall, 3 piece spoiler and the taller 3 piece were available again for 1971, but most 1971 cars had the 3 piece.

At this point I just want to know whether the short deck was available at all for this year Z.

What would you look for on a buildsheet to prove it was or wasn't? Did this year have specific RPO codes for each style deck spoiler? If so, what were they?

i think 70-71 z28's all had the short spoiler! I got the big spoiler on mine which is the three piece..but mine a RS. Then after 71 if was an option...to get the D80 spoiler(big).

In 1970 the race teams wanted a better areodynamic package (actually many of the first Trans Am race cars, were delivered WITHOUT any type of spoiler). Chevy needed to produce the tall 3-piece spoiler in order to homogulate it for racing, 500 units. It's said that production of tall spoiler cars was well below that, ie Chevy cheated and got away with it. In 1971 both were used. (evidently to clear out the unused 1970 low spoilers, it was a running change in '70 and get more on to qualify again for racing) By 1972 only the tall spoiler remained. So an original '70 tall spoiler car is a bit rare, but without a build sheet how would you prove it?
