You look over a '68 Camaro and it looks like a Rally Sport... how can you tell if it is a fake or not...

Well, one way is lay down underneath one of the backup lights and using a flashlight look at the back of it. If the mounting holes look a little bit butchered, then chances are great that its a fake.

What if someone had to replace the tail panel and used a replacement non-rs tail panel? Try finding an RS tail panel these days.

The backup lights don't screw into the tail panel, they screw into a panel behind that... that is what I'm talking about... you can't see behind the tail panel.

I replaced my tail panel with a non-rs panel, because that is all there is, cut the holes myself using the template. Then once the tail panel was installed on the car, we cut the holes in the panel behind the tail panel to accept the wire & the studs. That is the more difficult cut to make cleanly as the template block of wood isn't quite perfect or something...

Am I wording that clear enough?

I'm no expert but can't you tell from the small hole in the firewall where the pump squirter/headlights is?

I dont think he means the washers...If its a real RS i know in 69 they have a gromet on the firewall (next to the master cyl) )that has 2 vacume lines running thru it and they connect to the headlight switch on the dash.

lol I know what you mean i just laughed when i seen the replys! ...just think of the mess that would make if one of the washer lines broke inside of the car and gravity had its way! lmao

See, I learned something new! I actually was referring to the gromet but I did think that the '68 also had the washer pumphttp://www.camaros.net/forums/images/icons/icon9.gif

The hole in the firewall for the grommet is easy to duplicate. The 1968 Camaro Factory Assembly Manual shows exactly which dimple in the firewall is for the RS grommet hole.

If it is missing the 3 piece rocker trim look inside the doors and inside the rear quarters for the mounting holes where the trim attached. You can see this through the door jam astro vent grille when removed (one screw). A lot of guys don't want to put the 3 piece rocker trim back on their legit RS cars, I don't understand why. I know it's more expensive, but it looks a lot better with the upper trim along the window line.

I know someone will say what if they replaced all the sheet metal, well then no it won't tell you anything, but you can tell if they've replaced the sheet metal and if it hasn't been replaced the holes should be there.

There are a lot of other small things to look for, but do a search for old posts this has been covered over and over in the past.

Yeah, I know it's been covered tons of times... I was just posting something of my own experience while building a fake RS.
