the jerky steering (and probably the noise) is the air bubbles in the lines, just watch the fluid level as you sit parked and turn the wheel lock to lock until it smooths out
i would recomend jacking the front wheels off the ground

If the jerking feels like your power assist is going in and out then your belt is slipping.

Right, air... with the wheels off the ground, run the wheel back and forth slowly. Keep an eye on the reservoir, if it gets low, top it off, if it gets foamy, let it sit till the foam goes away and start over. It will become normal after a while.

It is best to turn the steering wheel lock to lock with the road wheels off the ground BEFORE starting the engine. When you start the engine with large amounts of air in the power steering circuit, the air passes through the power steering pump and is whipped to a froth with the oil. It takes considerably longer to get air out of the system when it has been converted to foam.
It will eventually work its way out of the system. Let it sit overnight. Then try a few lock to lock turns with the engine off. Check the fluid level in the reservoir. Refill as necessary. Go for a short ten mile drive. Things should be working smoothly and properly.
