: Please help me Diagnose this problem
KillaCam Sep 17th, 05, 01:08 PM I bought my 96 Camaro on monday, it has a 3.8L V6, it ran fine for a couple of days, then after it had been running awhile i was driving and stopped at a red light and all of a sudden it felt like it was going to die, had a rough idle, big loss of power and it responded late to the pedal and would kinda play out when id press the pedal like it was skipping or stuttering. Well one of the plugs on one of the coils was not making sparks so i replaced the coil, and all the others seem to be working fine, well i had my power back, but that stuttering was happening again. what could this be? the plug from the coil? a spark plug? Fuel injector? pleez help fast thanx
jpotts461 Sep 17th, 05, 01:40 PM Seems like this is a common 3.8 problem. Check posts below for 3.8 and you will see sequence. Most likely a coil pack. Run a seperate ground. The grounds and fiberglass do not work well. Leave any thoughts of a bad cat for very last. The packs can act good and spark but still be malfunctioning. You should see a code 300 - 306 or just a 300. Soon you will get a 420 from the cat. Raw fuel hitting it. The packs are 30.00. I am off to buy another. They are easy to change. If your spark plugs do not have a lot of miles on them or look good from pulling the one. You might leave them alone for a while. They are a B_ _ _ to change. The # 6 looks to be the worse but maybe the easiest use a spark plug socket and a wrench it should fit the outside of socket. I never knew why they put a wrench size on the outside. There is no room for a ratchet !!!! Make sure you install with a rubber hose. 75 % of time will be spent under the car on spark plugs and wires.

KillaCam Sep 17th, 05, 03:00 PM well i changed one of the coils all the rest seem to be ok, im just gonna go have it put on a machine on monday and have them deal with it
jpotts461 Sep 18th, 05, 03:02 AM I understand. I had to buy a lap top and some diagnostic software to deal with mine. I just did not want it to defeat me. I have had my software and stuff 4 days and did the manual troubleshooting before. Now I am back to waxing and not cursing the car. Just try to test an o2 sensor manually and it could scare you to the mechanic. Now I plug in let it run diagnostics and shoot a picture of scan and look at it later.
Good luck
KillaCam Sep 18th, 05, 08:12 PM ok i replaced the plugs that went from the coils and stuff it seemed to help a lot, well i can hear this one spark plug clicking and everytime it does my car sort of drops or stutters, well the guy said the wire came off of the spark plug, and he reattached it, well, it must have cam off again cuz it started again, im just gonna go have the spark plugs replaced...because at auto zone he ran the little cpu thing on it and he said it was a cylinder misfiring so the plugs are probably the problem

As you say it was running fine. Spark plugs do not go out that fast unless there is a major mechanical problem, Which I doubt. This is exactly the same symptoms as my wifes Camaro. Changing high milage plugs is a good thing but it might run the same. Labor is expensive to change them. Have the best mechanic you know of look at it. They have the tools and experience to quickly pinpoint problems. Changing random parts gets very expensive. Let me know when it is fixed what the problem was. My money is on the coil packs but that is an educated guess
KillaCam Sep 19th, 05, 01:06 PM well, i believe we fixed it. We replaced a spark plug ourselves that looked burnt up and then we lookied at the one beside it and the porseline or w.e the white part is called was cracked, then when we took it out half of it chipped off, so we replaced that also, seems to have taken care of it

Aldamar Sep 23rd, 05, 09:27 PM you said the porcelain chipped on one of your plugs?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but first, if you change one of your plugs, you should probably change all your plugs. And second, you're going to want to be wary of chunks of that porcelain breaking off inside. My buddy's 3'rd cylinder slowly shredded itself to bits because a chunk of a plug got stuck inside it.
Best wishes!
