I'm a little confused and wish you guys would help me out here. I thought all manual steering equipped Z-28 Camaros came with RPO code N-44 fast ratio steering. I also thought that all 69 Camaro manual steering boxes were the same (6.5 turns lock to lock) and what made the N-44 special was a longer pitman arm (5.75") and the longer steering arms (knuckles). Will you guys please educate me on these steering boxes? Also, do any of you have an original Z-28 manual steering box that you can tell me what the part number on top of it is? Thank you very much.

You're right on the money. The manual boxes were all the same. The long Pitman arm and knuckles made it the N44 package, quick ratio setup standard on the Z. My Z has this same arrangement- manual box with the long arm, etc.

There was a faster ratio manual box avialable with aprox 2.25 turns lock to lock for 67-69. The Trans-Am vintage racers use this box.

My stock optional fast ratio, non-power box I ordered new turns 3.5 turns lock to lock at the S/F to spindle stops with the long pitman arm and short bolt-on spindle arms.

I could turn a 90 degree corner with about one complete turn of my steering wheel. BUT with big tires and deep-dish, non-stock wheels, I could hardly parallel park her!!! In fact, I didn't parallel park her UNLESS I absolutely HAD to!! It was that hard to turn moving slow..

But at speed, it was GREAT!!

my 69z has the stock box in it that I rebuilt. One thing to keep in mind is in the car it is roughly 3.5 turns lock to lock and about 6 turns lock to out of the car. It also has all the original arms still in it. They can be bought new with either the same ratio or slightly faster.
