Ok I'm new to the site and camaros for that matter.I've been restoring chevelles for years now, taking a malibu and cloning it to a SS.I never switched a body tag or vin plate and always told buyers it is a clone"i keep the real SS cars I find".I started buying some camaros to do and bought a so called 67 RS SS350 4 speed shell.I have read the threads on this site and decoded the body tag which has the 4p and 3SL and others. It looks as if it has been there a long time but the vin number on the plate in the door jam doesnt match the vin on the body tag?124 body tag and 123 vin plate and all other numbers dont match. Please tell me there is a reasonable explanation for this!!!. I purchased it locally"I think I could take the guy" through the local paper and it was listed as a 67RSSS.
Thanks for your help in advance

They are two different numbers. As long as the vin on the door jam matches the title you are fine with the law. Go to camaro.org (CRG) and it will give you a break down on both sets of number. Or you can post a picture or the info on this site and some one will break them down for you. Good Luck Jerry

Fisher Trim tags are not supposed to match the numbers in the VIN tag, neither the numbers before the plant designator or the numbers after the plant designator. 12437 and 12467 in the VIN indicate a V8 coupe or convertible respectively, 12337 and 12367 indicate 6 cylinder coupes and 6 cylinder convertibles respectively. These sequences hold true for all thre years of the first generation Camaros. For 67 only the body style numbers on the cowl tag will start with 12437, 12467, 12637, or 12667. These refer to the interior style of the car. 12437 is a standard interior coupe, 12467 is a standard interior convertible, 12637 is a deluxe interior coupe, and 12667 is a deluxe interior convertible. After 67, the Fisher style number numbers were fixed at 12437 for all coupes, and 12467 for all convertibles. Fisher built the bodies and for the most part couldn't care less what engine GM put in the body after it left the Fisher side of the plant.

Sounds like you have a standard interior 6 cylinder coupe from the partial numbers provided. BUT, there no way a car with a 6 cylinder VIN should have a 4P code on the cowl tag. Either the cowl tag is a fake, the VIN, or the cowl tag has been swapped. Post the full cowl tag and VIN info (or atleast most of the VIN and someone will tell you if they line up correctly.

Go here and read all the pages if your going to make first generation Camaros a business. www.camaros.org (http://www.camaros.org/)

Welcome Finny! The "4" as the third character on the trim tag isn't a big deal, because it is always 4, no matter whether the car was 6 or V8. The body number and the last digits of the VIN don't match either, as they were two different sets of numbers each with an acceptable range. In other words, a body number and a VIN "match," but only with respect to a general range of production numbers. When you have an October trim tag on a May car, it's pretty obvious and can be told by the wizards here, based on the VIN and tag numbers.

The "3" in the third character of the VIN is a problem however, because it means the VIN is from a 6 cylinder car. A 6cyl could be an RS, but not an SS.

Don't know how the Chevelles are, but Camaros have two hidden VINs stamped in the body. One is on top of the passenger side of the cowl, may be visible through the slots in the cowl vent panel, and should be "7Nxxxxxx" or "7Lxxxxxx". This should match the tag on the door. The other hidden VIN is under the heater blower motor, opening, if the heater box is off your shell you should see this one pretty easy.

Thanks for the quick replies!!!I only have the title here at home and I'm tempted to drive to the shop a write down the cowl tag info.VIN is 123377n139415.Whats the weight of a 67 camaro non a/c,power drum brakes,4 speed small block car?big block?and 6 banger? My title states 3600lb.The tunnel in my 67 does have a factory square hole.I know the build date as 05c,paint"N".Would a rs ss have come with a big sway bar?

Theres only one size sway bar used on all production 67 to 69 Camaros it's 11/16" in diameter. The 69 COPO 9737 Sports Cars Conversion got a 13/16" bar and its the only other size used from the factory. A VIN of 139415 from the norwood plant was built in November 1966. An 05C (third week of May 67) cowl tag does not go with that VIN at all. You nned to find out whats been swapped, cowl tag or VIN plate.
