View Full Version : 94' Z28 what motors fit?

Just finished looking at a 1994 Z28 with 60,000 leather int great shape. However it does not have a motor or trans. I was told it had a LT1 with a 460L automatic. My question is what fits. Would a 350TPI and a 700r from a
1984 camaro fit. Also are there any combos from lets say caprice or firebird fit what years. I have been trying to find a motor for the same year but no luck. How about a LS1 or LS2 ? I herd they would fit but not the accesories. Any body out there have tried this?I hate to pass up on this car as it is mint.
Please help.

If you post your location (or add it to your profile) we could steer you better on getting a drivetrain together. For example, I know a place in SE PA that specializes in wrecked late model GM performance cars, and I have gotten a few LT1/4L60Es from them.

To answer your original question about the 350 TPI/700R4 combo fitting, maybe but...
the 4L60E is an electronic version of the 700R4, so that would fit, but the 94's computer will wonder what's going on down there. The older stye small block might physically fit, but the engine in a 4th gen is set so far back under the cowl that I can't imagine trying to run a rear distributor engine in one. The LT1 has a front mounted distributor, and the LS1s use indvidual coil packs for each cylinder so there's no distributor back there.

Thanks For the info on the TPI. I'm in the Miami area.
This car is mint. I have bought all kinds of cars before never a 90ish so I'm a little out in the knolege dept. My 1970 Chevelle is 90% done and I would like to start on this one.The guys at Team Chevelle help a lot. So hoping for the same here.

here in cali if you put an older motor in the car it would have to pass the 94 model year smog test and get a very long check by the state ref.
if you put a newer motor in the car it has to pass the newer motor smog check and get the same ref inspection

and the instalation of the motor that was origional equip will be 1000 times easier and not require fabrication and tons of extra work

You will need to drop the LT1 back in there, unless you plan on buying a new computer for the car. If thats the case, you can go with a later model LS1.

I would find a used and abused LT1 motor, scavage the electronics, manifold, etc and then send the shortblock in and swap it out with a rebuilt one. You can get into a hopped up shortblock very reasonably, and you are getting 50-75 more horsepower to boot.

Trannys are a dime a dozen on ebay or similar places. for that matter, so are the motors.

Merch120. thanks for the links but I thought that the Vette motor would not work in a Camaro usless you changed the Oil pan and the accesories? Would love to have a LS1or a LS2 from a Vette but would it be a lot of work.
I found somebody in Bradenton that sell LT1 and trans off a Caprice but I bo not know if the accesoriens are the same. I know the harness has to be different. Got a couple of guys from LT1.net sending some e-mails with what they have for sale let see what happens.
This car is just to nice to let it end up a race car. Let see if I can save it.

As far as I know the block in itself is the same. You may have to swap a few accessories out, but you end up with more ponies as a bonus.

I would take the route I suggested. Buy the hi-mileage LT1 specifically out of a Camaro, then trade the block in on a rebuilt LT1, then add the manifolds and such from the old motor on to the new block. I have heard with no computer mods or major changes these motors will run 375 HP on pump gas.

There is a place in Bristol PA that does it... I can't remember the name though.
