View Full Version : 69 Z motor
69camaro565 Sep 22nd, 05, 09:42 PM A month or so ago I said I would post the #s from a DZ short block I have. Am I right that this is a very early DZ motor?
the good news...
3932386...
K-27-8
V1 I 30 DZ
the bad news is I cant find a vin #...nothing on front pad, I believe that this early they were near the oil fiter pad, and there seems to be an "N" and maybe a couple of other numbers, but so lightly stamped. The block is not rusted and even tried to clean up the area near the oil filter pad a bit, but they stamped way to light on a rough casting. I will try to get a good magnifier to see if that helps. Thought maybe someone here might have the car this belongs to. I will try to get more #s if I can. This has been in my cellar for almost 25 years...my friend got it from a guy who owned the Z and he put it in his 70 nova then he sold the nova without the motor and was going to build a camaro but it never happened so he asked me if I wanted it, almost said no cause I was doing a bbc at the time...guess $250 was a good deal.
Jonesy Sep 22nd, 05, 10:11 PM Could be a real DZ. Can you post pics of the stamping? My guess is that the VIN will be N552xxx - N556XXX.
RamAirDave Sep 22nd, 05, 10:35 PM Looks to be a late Nov 68 block, which the 386 block lines out right for that time period.
But the VIN should be stamped on the front pad, as they werent stamped at the oil filter area til the Jan 69 time area.
Maybe there were some earlier examples that are exceptions to this. Maybe the engine wasnt put into a car for a while afterwards? I'm guessing the CRG guys will know if it could be possible or not.

69camaro565 Sep 22nd, 05, 10:47 PM I will look at the front pad again, as i'm doing this (looking at the #s) at an angle cause the block is way back in a crawl space. How would I post "pics"?
RamAirDave Sep 23rd, 05, 12:19 AM You cant attach pics in posts here, so if you dont have any setup to host/post pics, you can email them to me at RamAirDave@aol.com and I'll post them here for you, no problem.
Just try to get a good, clear pic of the front pad and the oil filter "pad" areas.

69camaro565 Sep 23rd, 05, 02:02 AM I will do that Dave...prob in a couple of days as I work 24 hour shifts...I will take some pics and send them to you, Thanks.
ChevyThunder Sep 23rd, 05, 03:32 AM Take something to clean that area near the oil filter where the VIN may be and then try rubbing a piece of white chalk into the area..it will help you see the numbers more clearly
Leonard1 Sep 23rd, 05, 06:04 AM I think it's very possible to have the VIN stamped by the filter that early. Perhaps there was a period of transition when it was stamped on either place? I have a V1204DZ block that has the VIN stamped pretty clearly by the filter, N565XXX, but it couldn't be seen at all until I had it hot-tanked. Jonesy is probably pretty close on the VIN range. I also have a V1113DZ with the VIN on the pad, N543XXX. This would be a good question for JohnZ.
Gary L Sep 23rd, 05, 08:21 AM I have a V1I19DZ stamped by the oil filter.
smith69z Sep 23rd, 05, 08:34 AM I have a VO0227DZ stamped by the oil filer and a VO0407DZ stamped on the deck.
Neil B Sep 23rd, 05, 09:09 AM I have a 386 block with a K128 casting date, V1120DZ assembly date, 552xxx VIN on the pad, in a 12A car.

I have blocks and have recently just sold some blocks in Aug and Sept 68 with VIN stamps by the oil filter area. I also have block with out it in the same time range.

Hey, that's pretty cool. Just out of curiosity, do you have a 'I' instead of a '1' in your V1120DZ stamp? Mine has the number '1' and no 'I'.
Also, do you know your head casting dates? Mine are J288 and K18.

Mine is V1"I"20DZ, well, without the italics! :clonk: ,both heads are K12. It may be interesting, curious, or suspect but my block was also cast on K12. Don't know if that's somewhat normal or what. Still pretty cool that two of these motors stamped the same day have survived.
Billy d. Sep 26th, 05, 04:47 PM i have one that is v1202dz and the vin is 5679xx. vin is by the oil filter boss.
Kurt S Sep 26th, 05, 06:50 PM I think the post went away when we went to the newer style forum, but I'm always interested in pictures of 67-69 engine pads. :) Pics of pads of spare blocks are welcome too.
For 69's, moving the alternator out of the way is about the only way to get a clear shot. 67's and 68's are alot easier. The macro mode on the camera can be helpful for getting a focused shot.
Thanks!!
DZ Fool Jan 26th, 06, 08:22 PM Old post but it looks like K 12 68 was a good day for making DZ Motors
4Z2864 Jan 26th, 06, 09:41 PM Geez, DZ FOOL, I HAVE to finish my Z so I can park it next to yours somewhere and work up a sweat going back and forth between them! They almost had to 'see' each other on their 'birthday'!

Not true. My V1I19DZ is stamped at the filter.
z28doug Jan 26th, 06, 10:53 PM I believe the location of the VIN stamp varied between the Norwood cars and the Van Nuys cars. At times they were consistent and other times not.
For example a November Van Nuys block was stamped by the oil filter, a November Norwood car was stamped on the pad.

Maybe are cars didn't see each other but our motors sure did.
