Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue asked all state school systems to close Monday & Tuesday in order to conserve fuel.

Hurricane Rita is bringing "snow days" to the Peach State. In accordance with a request by Governor Perdue, Columbia County will take Monday and Tuesday off.
Schools were asked to declare the two days as a holiday because of anticipated shortages due to this week's evacuation of the Gulf Coast. Columbia county says that its weekend's events will continue as normal. Both Richmond and Columbia counties have cancelled extracurricular events planned for Monday and Tuesday however.
Students and staff should return to class on Wednesday September 28. We'll list all of the schools that agree to follow the governor's order below as they confirm it.
Schools closed (mandatory holiday) Monday September 26 & Tuesday September 27:
Columbia County, Richmond County, Screven County, Lincoln County, Jefferson County, McDuffie County, Burke County, Wilkes County, Glascock County, Jenkins County, Emanuel County, Washington County, Johnson County
In Richmond County, the Saturday Scholars Program for Saturday, Sept. 25 has been cancelled. However, all athletic events scheduled for Saturday will take place, as scheduled.
Augusta State University and East Georgia College (Swainsboro) WILL be open Monday and Tuesday for students.
Augusta Tech will be closed Monday & Tuesday for students; Administrative staff should report only.
