View Full Version : Simply Green or GUNK!
CFunK Sep 24th, 05, 07:34 PM I am gonna be doing a fall cleaning on the '67 tomorrow and was wondering what you guys recommend for cleaning the engine bay? I have used GUNK! in the past but was looking at a more environmently friendly alternative.
Any opinions?
ummgawa Sep 24th, 05, 07:56 PM Handful of quarters and the Local spray wash. Hey Funk, did you call me? I switched services and its all bad right now...

PS., I know, I know!! ---- Try Castrols Super Clean!! In the purple jug.
BUT don't leave it on too long b/c it will remove paint in about three days full strength!! Great for soaking heads!! AND such.....
69vert Sep 24th, 05, 08:21 PM Simple Green has an industrial strength cleaner and it works great. Its clear by the way.

camaroman7d Sep 24th, 05, 08:23 PM I guess it would depend on how dirty your engine bay is. Simple Green is my first choice and works real well, it doesn't hurt any surfaces or your hands. Castrol Super Clean works well, but will mess up polished aluminum, also will harm paint (not to mention your hands). Gunk is really not much more than oven cleaner (which works very well by the way). Oven cleaner will also dull polished parts, remove paint, etc... So depeneding how bad off your engine is that would dictate the choice (caked grease and plan to repaint = oven cleaner, a little oil and dirt = Simple Green)
djunod Sep 24th, 05, 08:41 PM I'm extremely partial to "Purple Power"... tried the Simple Green and it was too simple...
zuma Sep 24th, 05, 09:10 PM Chris, If your engine bay is not that dirty...start out using the safest, simple green. if that doesn't do it for you, then castrol purple super clean, if THAT STILL doesn't get use Gunk...good luck :) Mike
pdq67 Sep 24th, 05, 09:33 PM I bought an "under-the-bed" Poly Ethylene storage container with a lid to use to clean heads using Super Clean out in my garage!
I just have to watch tripping over it is all....

Musclerodz Sep 24th, 05, 10:06 PM Simple Green will corrode bare aluminum if not washed off. I have found that out using it to degrease small airplanes. Works great, just make sure you clean it well. I have had no problems with any other surface.
Actually I prefer oven cleaner for an excellent degreaser.

CFunK Sep 24th, 05, 10:24 PM Thanks guys for the input.
I have a few aluminum pices under the hood. The dirt/grease/oil under the hood should not require an extreme amount of soaking with any cleaner. Spray it on, let it work for 15 minnows and then hose it off.
I think I will start with Simply Green and use the Castrol product for anything the SG doesn't remove.
pdq67 Sep 25th, 05, 09:23 AM Yes, "Easy-Off" oven cleaner works darn good too!
I have stripped paint with it but it takes several try's..

Do NOT use oven cleaner if it's windy outside! It has the same effect as pepper spray :D I like the purple stuff the best for degreasing parts...

Granny's 69 Sep 25th, 05, 12:27 PM I can't say enough good things about Simple Green!
I cleaned my entire rear axle with several soakings of Simple Green, the local car wash high pressure sprayer and tons of scrubbing with wire brushes. Here is the before pic:
