We dropped the trans pan in my 68 a while ago and saw these little grainy shavings in the bottom of the pan

My suspicion is that these are from the clutch plates.

The trans still worked when the car was drivable, but often it took a while to shift between gears. I think its time for a new trans. What do you guys think?

Actually, its totally normal to have some shavings in the bottom of the pan. These shavings are made up of some clutch material, and also minute steel shavings from normal wear and tear. If it is excessive, and the trans is slipping or hesitating going into gear, it might be time for an overhaul IMO. Try changing the filter and fluid. If the filter is clogged with debris, the tranny will exhibit the traits you describe, but may not need a rebuild.

Forget 4-speed, go TKO!

But seriously, it's a little hard to give advice on this without knowing which automatic you have, and where you are in terms of the project and budget. Some trannies can handle more abuse, and a little junk in the pan is normal, like Bob said. The slowness in shifting can be wear internal to the trans, or it could be something else.

If everything is torn out and easy to deal with, a reputable trans shop may be able go through it for a reasonable amount of money. If it's an original Glide and you want to keep it, rebuild. If it's a Glide and you don't want to keep it but want a fairly low budget option, get a rebuilt short tail TH350.

If money isn't tight and you want some fun, go TKO!

Sorry, You're right a 4 speed would be great, but I'm really cheap, and hoped to maybe save him some $$ :):):) Forget what I said...ditch that locked up 'glide for the hand-shaker!
