View Full Version : BTO trans x-member/trans mount prob
GunnerV Sep 27th, 05, 10:09 PM I finally got the 200-4r trans mounted today and I've run into a little snag (imagine that ;)). I bought the trans, x-member and trans mount from Bowtie Overdrives but it looks like the crossmember is about 3/4" too short.

I should have room to extend the slots in the crossmember, but I wanted to see if anyone else had this problem before I break out the die grinder.
MStennes Sep 27th, 05, 10:55 PM Gunner, Yes I bought a 700R4 crossmember that needed a major die grinding. This las summer I went with a 2004R and bought one of their crossmembers and it was so far off I ended up using it after cutting the flanges of and making new ones my self that did fit. I also know of another member of this board who got a 4L80 crossmember from them and it was so far off he made the remark that he wondered if they even knew what a 4L80 was. After seeing both the 700R4 and the 2004R and far off they were I wonder if the even have a tape measure in their shop. Oh by the way if you call them their reply is thats the first they heard of it and it must be your car?????

HwyStarJoe Sep 28th, 05, 07:28 AM Hmmmm.... makes me rethink getting their 700r4 crossmember, and just reconfiguring a th400 crossmember myself. Save time AND money.
rojo Sep 28th, 05, 07:48 AM Mine was off too until I realized I had it in the wrong set of holes in the sub frame.
camcojb Sep 28th, 05, 08:10 AM Yeah, I'm the 4L80 guy. Not sure what they're doing over there, but they need to mockup their crossmembers again and verify that they work. I can see small issues like you have if you're running the 307 frame pads (I think that's the one) that moved the engine forward 1/2" or so, which may exactly be what's going on here. They probably fit the crossmember to the more common 350 style which moves the engine back a bit.
As far as the 4L80 crossmember, no mount was going to make that fit; it was off by 6-7"!!!!!!!!!!!

Eric Kammerer Sep 28th, 05, 08:56 AM I'm not sure what the flanges on the outside (frame side) of that crossmember look like, but could you drill another set of holes? That's how the Classic Chevy 5-speed TKO crossmember is set up.

I wonder how the CC5S crossmember would work for you automatic OD guys. It works very well with the TKO. Jeff and Scott have gotten away from selling just pieces of the conversion kits, but if that cross would work for the auto guys, maybe Jeff could help.
Let me know if I can take any measurements to help.
BPOS Sep 28th, 05, 10:08 AM Hmmm....
I used their 2004R crossmember and it fit perfectly the first time. (307 frame stands) As stated above, make sure you're using the correct set of holes in the subframe.
While it doesn't look like a big job to modify it, at the price they charge that sucker should fit!

My thoughts exactly.
I am running the stock 327 engine mounts (now powdercoated to the rest of the subframe, oops). I only see one set of holes in the subframe and the holes on the flanges of the crossmember are for side to side movement, not fore and aft. I'll check to see if I used the wrong subframe holes, it was pretty late when I got it in last night so I might have spaced out.
MStennes Sep 28th, 05, 06:43 PM No, I know I have 350 mounts and they were close but not on. The 700R4 needed to be made wider as they were on for length but a little off for width. I reamed them a little on the sides to make it fit. Now on the 2004R is was off allot so I ended up cutting the frame mounts off and making new ones that were where they needed to be. Thats when I called them about it. They would send me a new one after I sent the old one back to them but they kept insisting it was frame that was off? Funny everything else goes where it should. I also had a beef with them as when I received it it was not painted it was still unfinished steel. If I lived closer I would have sent it back but when you want your car finished I just refabbed it to work. It still irritates me how it was off and they didnt even paint it but thats one I ate so I could get my car back on the road.
rcatalano Sep 28th, 05, 07:29 PM On my car, there were 2 different sets of holes in the frame for the crossmember. When I used the wrong one, I had the same issue. Using the second set of holes, everything lined up perfectly.
