hey guys, totally new to this chat thing, but i love camaros and just bought a very choice L89. I paid quit alot, but this car belonged to a friend of mine that died about 21 years ago, he bought it new. Car has all documentation 2 broadcast copies, protecto plate, new car checkoff list "Gordon Wilson Chevrolet", in SLC Ut. Car has 18,649 original miles is a 4 speed, no other options to speak of. I have been watching this car for all these years, had my chance to buy it for 4.500 when my friend died, his widow wanted me to have it, but emotions were high and I passed on it. It is quite a long story, but I did get the second chance to get it back and took it. The car was in better hands with the gentlman I got it from, he is 74 years old now and only put 6 miles on the car himself! Ask me some questions, this car is a rare find, and I am bursting to talk about it, Mike.

I will get my daughter to help send some photos. It is dusk blue or 51 51 on the paint code. I know it may sound like a fantasy car, but it is finally at my home now. It has been a garage case forever. Got to sleep now, maybe tomorrow on the pictures thanks, Mike.

Sounds sweet! Plus sentimental value is something you can't put a price on no matter what. Can't wait to see some pictures. What trans is in it(M20, M21, M22)? What rear gears are in it?

Welcome to Team Camaro, get your pad and pencil and flashlight and write down all the numbers.. VIN, Cowl tag, engine block and vin, tranny numbers and vin, axle numbers. Also double check the partial VIN under the vented cowl area below the passenger side wiper. It should match the last numbers in your VIN too. Cant wait to see your new baby :)

If you only paid "quit alot" you stole it. It should be more like a *#%^=>&!* load if you gave what it could be worth.

Thank you for doing the pictures Van! I will try to share more pictures and details as I get time. I also want to thank old Wayne in the photos for preserving this car for all these years. He is 74 years old now and still goes over 200 MPH at the Salt flats, and hold three world records. What a guy!! I do know quite a few like him and their stories are quite remarkable. Age can have its advantages, I feel them every morning! Thanks everybody, Mike.

Hey guys, before I get hammered for the chrome pieces left on the car, please remeber this was my best friends car, he bought it new, and the chrome was done in the mid eighties, and considered cool back then. I will probally remove it, but this is a small matter considering the car has only 14,649 original miles. I also know form the broadcast sheet it came with redline tires and steel wheels. My friend Wayne. who I bought it from liked the factory mags and wide oval tires, so I will live with them. The Hurst "T" handle was my friend Johns touch and will stay. I will try to get you some chassis shots, it has been cleaned to perfection! P.S. The 65 Oldsmobile in some of the photos is what Wayne drives at the Salt Flats over 200 MPH and he holds 3 world land speed records. He is 74 years old and fearless! What a mechanic and a great guy. Thanks!

I'd leave it alone and enjoy it as it is equipped.

Very nice! It would look great with either the SS wheels or the steel wheels with redlines. The car has that personalized touch so I would probably leave it the way it is. I think people like hearing about a car's history which explains the non-stock items. Can we see a better picture of the broadcast sheet, it looks to be in mint condition.

Yes, I would like to see a more clearer copy of the broadcast sheet. It can help me in my restoration of my L89 car. Also more picture of the underside and spring and suspension stickers.

What a great car and story, it is great to hear a good story like this.

Thanks

The car actually has two broadcast sheets, I will get a more detailed picture for you soon. As you can see good old Wayne kept them in the fireproof box, in a safe, in his locked office! I think he knew the value of the documentation! I have had my Camaro buddys over to see it, and they are amazed they never heard of this car. It has been stored covered under that loft you see in the photos and out of sight. I am happy you guys appreciate him, he is a great friend to the car hobby we have. This is a guy who really has done it all from flying planes to collecting antiques and racing cars to the max!

Most records of the first generation of camaros are at www.camaros.org they can most helpful with number of cars built etc. but I dont think there is a registry as such for the L89's.
Great find and super story to ready. :) That car deserves 100's of digital pics taken of it 'as is' to document a factory car that is just like the day it was born.

Now that you mention it, it should have a black tailpan, right? Could the blackout have been omitted via special order?

Is it an LA or Norwood built car? Being in CA, I thought it might be a Van Nuys L89.

I'd like to see the trim tag numbers if you get a chance...

Guys, it is a LA built car, and the tailpan should be blue, not black. Black, dusk blue, Fathom green and burnished brown cars did not get blacked out tail pans and rockers I believe. If I am wrong be kind, but the paint is factory and original!

Mike,
Very nice car!! Thanks for sharing the story and pictures.

My Van Nuys car had the chassis broadcast copy on top of the gas tank. Do you know if your body broadcst copy was found someplace in your car, such as under the carpet, etc.?
Thanks

Ive been waiting all day to get home to check out the pics since photobucket is blocked at work :)

Very nice find. Any chance of a better straight on pic of the POP at all along with the cowl tag and the VIN plate.

Even better that its a LA car with DOCS something you dont see very much at all!!!!

All BB's except black cars got blacked out tailpans. Rockers depended on color.

That broadcast sheet came with the dealer paperwork. No idea why some dealers passed it on (if they ever had the sheets to begin with), but they did.

CRG has data on 26 69 L89 cars with several others known. :)

Mike, welcome to a great site. That is a great car. Chrome or not! Love to have something like it.
My wife has relatives in West Jordon, never been there myself.

Jeff, I am blocked too. I guess there is not much difference between PACAF and AMC computers. I just got a tip for a MSgt slot at PACAF HQ at Hickam (POL) Wife doesn’t want to go though.....maybe I will go alone!! I wouldn’t mind three years in HI.

Anyway....What an awesome L89. Nothing like a BBC with factory aluminum heads, that is I guess, unless it’s an all aluminum ZL1!! We should have a TC meet at Mike's place. A good old fashioned cruise in! I'll even bring the burgers!

On the hood pins, I am pretty sure John put them on in the early years he run it in a ET bracket. As far as the paint, it is factory original with a blue back pan. If it conflicts with what you know, I am sorry, but this is a original paint, no doubt. I will try to get a better shot of the broadcast sheet for you.

I thought you could see some paperwork indicating a repair being done at the dealer. Any chance that might have been the dealer painting the rear tailpanel blue to match the car because the owner didn't like it black? That would be cool to document.

:waving: Thanks for all the good words on the car! I told you I was busting at the seams to talk about it. Any idea what a car like this could bring at a Barrett Jackson auction? It is not for sale, but I am looking to justify the expense for my wife, you know the drill, honey, it is going to do nothing but go up in price! I think you now can see just how real it is, and when I get more pictures of it in the early years at the race track I will post them. This car blistered the track for a door slammer!

Reminds me somewhat of my buildsheet except I was flippin out when I saw IF where I thought I would see XT. My car was built 4,759 before this car at Van Nuys. Kurt S let me know that was okay, that IF wheels were used on SS models in 69 although not that common.

Please don't talk about that inflated Barrett Jackson around here! Just kidding. I don't think Barrett Jackson has much to do with reality. If your a super rich oil billionare, money or real value does not matter much. If you want a value to cool the wife off. I am sure it would go over the 100k mark there. A car in the condition of yours and the detailed clean docs is priceless in my book! You can find rare cars, the hard part is finding nice original rare cars!

I almost forgot to reply the question on deep groove pulleys. The alternator and smog pump are deep, but not the waterpump pulley. I checked my 68 L78 car and it looks to be the same as the 69. If this is incorrect let me know and I will dig into my old chrome piles and see if it ended up there. Like I said before there are a few things yet to be addressed, but this car is so basicly stock and unmolested it still amazes me! It makes my other Camaros look pale.

Hey guys, its been awhile since I posted the 1969 L89 survivor pictures and documentation, and it has been suggested to me to contact a magazine like Super Chevy to see if they would do a article on this car. I have to admit it does sound cool if they would do it. Any suggestions on how to get it going or if this car would qualify. I do think it fits in well with the guys like you out there restoring historical cars. Let me know what you all think, good or bad, thanks again Mike.

Great car with great docs!
Do you know when the engine compartment was restored/refreshed? Looks to be recent.

nikkisdad
Oct 5th, 05, 12:16 AM
I really could not put an exact date on it, because the previous owner has had it since 1987. It has been covered forever, and not driven, and I did have to dust it off when I recieved it. I am sure it is not real recent though. He only put six miles on it since he had it, I have that on video tape,Thanks.

I am curious, in one of the pics it show the rear spoiler, is that the later longer one or is it the early short one.

nikkisdad
Oct 5th, 05, 09:27 AM
The spoiler was put on the car by the second owner, and though it is not on the build sheet it is a NOS unit he found. I am not famililar with the difference of the spoilers, give me some measurements or what to look for and I will figure it out. As you can see the build sheet also mandates XT wheels painted 51 51 and red lines, but he just liked these factory mags and wide ovals better. All of all the car is mostly untouched, and the thing that needed attention were NOS and professionally done, thanks.

shaugs
Oct 5th, 05, 10:14 AM
From what I can see it looks like it has been well maintained, with areas such as the engine compartment restored. The short spoiler is a 68 model left over and was installed on cars as late as 3/69, although some later style were mixed in production in late Jan-Feb of 69. The easiest way to tell is that the later/longer extends flush with the quarter, were the early/shorter is about 1/2 inch short of the top of the quarter.

I noticed this thread has no mention of the condition or verification of the block assembly code or vin stamp? I assume you checked it out and all is OK?

nikkisdad
Oct 5th, 05, 10:30 PM
Verification has been made in every respect. I checked, and rechecked! With the kind of cash I had to lay out for this car, I will not allow for any mistakes. I also know the entire history of the car since new, we are a tight little group and it has not left anyones sight ever! Even so, I did have the car in the air and gave it a complete rundown to be totally sure.

36j1967
Oct 6th, 05, 07:51 AM
That is really the crowning jewel for a car like this. So many of these solid lifter BB cars were ordered for track use and even with low miles suffered considerable abuse. It wasnt the kind of car you could put the family in after a day at the track and head to Disneyland. My 68 L78, M22, 4.56 has only 15,000 original miles on the body. The car was used at the dragstrip and thrashed untill the drivetrain gave up. I was lucky enough to find an original 68 MQ block to build from and the car has POP, sales invoice, and window sticker. I would agree that a feature article in one of the auto magazines would be in order for a find like this.

Oct 6th, 05, 08:30 AM
Thanks you! I was in the process of cleaning up my 68 L78 with 33,000 origanal miles and paint at the time my friend John died. I have not put a wrench on that car since. The car was used by us in high school, motor developed a rod knock, and was parked since 1972 the year I graduated. I bought it from the Japanese guy that owned it after he got into drugs and trouble. He had bought tons of camaro parts from Streator Chevrolet in SLC, had the motor rebuilt with lots of machine work, had extra trannys, tic toc tacks, bench seat, fold down seat, many, many race parts in the box, extra sheet metal, including 68 gm quarters for the car, shifters, and on, and on! I got a call from him while he was working in Las Vegas Nevada at the power plant wanting to know if I still wanted to buy it. He told me that everything would go for 1,500 dollars!!!!! I did later find out he owed money for drugs to some way bad boys, and desparately needed quick money. I will try to make time to get some pictures of this car to add to this L89 story, I guess it is kind of interesting. P.S. the 68 L78 was driven in Utah winters, and the original paint does have alot of lacuer checking, and it also was a high school car so please be kind!

I almost forgot to reply the question on deep groove pulleys. The alternator and smog pump are deep, but not the waterpump pulley. I checked my 68 L78 car and it looks to be the same as the 69.

I would almost bet money that my 69 Z28 left the factory with a shallow groove power steering pulley. Every other pulley with my car was correct, and the water pump is correct, but it is the non-deep groove 69 pulley, stamped with the standard part number and all. It's just hard for me to believe that someone changed that one part over the years, but I suppose anything is possible. I sometimes think these cars got whatever was laying around at the time, if they ran short of correct pieces:)

I am still puzzled over the question on the tail pan on this L89. I understand, and believe you guys that it should be painted black, but here I have a bone stock original factory paint job, with all the documentation in the world on the car, yet it is the blue 51 color. I wonder if anyone could tell me how this could be? Possibly ordered that way? I have sat on the ground studying all of the bolts, pinch welds, paint, checked with a magnet, looked inside trunk, etc. looking for a clue, but none to be found, only to more reasure me it is absolutely factory paint. Someone please consult the Camaro Gods on this for me, thanks Mike.

Based on the fact that a spoiler was added and needed to be painted, I would suspect that at that time the tail panel was repainted. Check the trunk weather strip area (move the w/s by putting side pressure) and look for signs of black paint. Also the side stripes on the car look like they were not positioned properly. Could you post a pic of the side stripe towards the front, close to where it ends at the bumper. Why are you so sure it is original paint?

In the one fender pic, the stripe looks to be rearward about 2 inches (the bottom notch in the stripe doesn't line up with the bumper) and stripes widths don't look quite right by the door. The trunk weatherstrip should tell you more.
Soooo hard to tell from pics, but I'm leaning towards repainted. 36 years, not real surprising, esp if the original paint isn't perfect, it gets fixed.

On the question of original paint, this car has been in the possesion of 4 people since new. We are all friends and see each other fairly regular. John "died", Mark, Wayne "the old guy in the photos", and now me. No one else has been in possesion of the car, it is without a doubt original factory paint! Guys, I know this car, had my chance to buy it after Johns death for 4,500 passed on it because of the high emotions of his death, watched my friend Mark keep it for 3 years, then he sold it to Wayne, stored and basicly forgot about since 1987 until, I just bought it from him before Hot August Nights. Wayne is now 74 years old, and kind of thinning his herd of cars. We all understood the value of the original paint and that is why it has been ratholed for so long. Please read all of the threads, on the history on the car, I will try to get the photos of my 68 L78 with original paint on as well. Time for these two cars stopped when John died. I quit working on the 68 and the 69 got put away. I know that repainted cars are the norm, and it would be easier to believe that it was repainted, but I just absolutely know this cars history. P.S. Wayne put on the spoiler because the original paint on the trunk had a bad ding that could not be rubbed out. Would have been easy to repaint the lid, but the spoiler covered the effected area to retain the original paint so that is why it is present but not original to the car. I would have just left the ding showing, but he was the owner then.

Hey Camaro guys, I have been e-mailed as to where the photos of my L89 went. Thanks to ChevyThunder you can find them on page 5 of this disscussion, and click on the photobucket.com link he has provided. Thanks for all of the kind words on the car, and I will be looking for the proper XT wheels and caps to paint #51 blue and get the redline tires to bring the car more perfectly inline with the broadcast sheets. Boy I can see their advantage of having them. Hope everybody is well, Mike.

Most likely , the tail pan should be black. Without reading every post on your car and looking at all the pics again. If your car is from Ca. LOS? 51 was a special order color. My Z28 has never had stripe on it. I know they came that way on the early cars, but my car has a 51 51 code and not a - -. It was mostly original paint and was bare metaled years ago when my buddy had it repainted. It never had a stripe on it. I would guess anything is possible. You would have to be there really to know for sure? But being original paint. That's pretty hard to fight with? There are proven mistakes on these cars. There is no perfect science!

The tail pan and rockers on a 51 paint code SS big block should be body color, not black as far as I know.

Thank you for the information Bob. I will stand on the fact that this is unmolested original factory paint! I have just known the history of the car, and it has never been out of my sight ever. The car does have some chips, small dings, but its paint is totally remarkable for a car of this rarity. This car has done its time stored in garages. I really would like to bring it to Carlilse for the inspection for survivors next year. Utah is a long drive away, but it would be a blast! Thanks for following the L89 saga guys....... :waving: :waving:

What's your source for that info?
I know of at least one 51-51 396 car, orig paint, black tailpan. Which agrees with GM documentation.
