My buddy has a 69 RS Z28 its an X77. He has owned the car since 1978 and we think the engine may have been swapped a long the way. The engine code on the front deck has a YZ suffix. Could you guys tell me where this block came from or could it be a service item from back then. Any info is appreciated.

Thanks Rich

Definately not a DZ, its a YZ small block chevy. Has a 1178 crank in it. We have never been able to figure out where this block came from?

Thanks Rich

Would not have been a service replacement as first letters were CExxxxxxx

I don't find YZ anywhere. Could it possibly be TYZ? 75-78 truck 350.

Maybe a dumb question, but did they make X77 with RS option, I've
only seen X33 with RS. Just an observation...

All 2 letter suffix codes that begin with a Y* are for 1965-68 Chevy trucks, 327 engine. No YZ though..

Brian, any camaro could be ordered with the RS option, no matter the X code or engine type. 6 cyl, SS, Z28, ragtop, coupe, stick or auto. tranny, no matter the setup, RS was a totally seperate option that could be ordered. :)

I disagree. Style trim was included with the RS package, therefore a z28 with the RS package would be an X-33 coded car.

Dan is correct. A factory RS car could not have an X77 code. X33 was for style trim which was included in the RS package. Put another way, although not all X33 cars were RS, all RS were X33 cars.

As for the engine block, get the casting number and the casting date, and maybe that will give us a clue. Also, is there a partial VIN stamped down by the oil filter?

Dan and Lynn, good points and correct. I wasnt clear in my wording but was just implying that the RS was an option, similar to power windows and such, available on most any engine combination since it was an appearance upgrade not related to performance like the Z and SS. :) The charts at www.camaors.org are more definitive of course, which is good.

remove the alt , clean the pad and take a good picture and post it so everyone can see what you have.... an X77 car is a base Z 28....part of the RS option is style trim.... X33 cars are a Z -28 with style trim , so only an X33 car had the RS option available ..unless it was a Van Nuys Z or a Norwood pre X code car.. I think I got that right :)
