View Full Version : Borg-Warner ST10 Questions
Barry H Sep 29th, 05, 06:52 AM Anyone,
I went to look at the above last night and think I've found the tranny for my rebuild of my first car. 67 RS Camaro, bought when I was 16 and been stored since 1987.
The tranny apparently came out of a 1974 corvette, the date on the tranny is 8/19/74. Numbers are 1304065903 and 13-04-066-901, 26 spline input shaft w/ 3 grooves, no end play. I believe this would make this a 1st gear ratio of 2.64, then 1.75, 1.33, and 1.00 in fourth.
I have a good old 327 to build for this car, actually its the same engine I ran around with in my youth.
Questions, is this a good street use tranny? Does the lower 1st gear ratio mean I can use a lower numerically rear gear for better highway manners? I was thinking about 3.31 to 3.55 range. Rear is 10 bolt, 8.2 posi.
I'll be PM'ing pdq67 for suggestions on the 327 buildup soon.
Any suggestions and comments welcome. Thanks. Barry

I didn't think '70's Corvette's had B-W in them, unless installed by the previous owner(s). I could be wrong.
B-W's have a cast iron main case. Muncie's are all alum case. You described it as having 3 grooves around the input shaft, as in Muncie did this.
Yes, you could run a lower numerial rear axle ratio if the trans is geared as you suggest.
Straight-line-69 Sep 29th, 05, 09:58 AM Borg Warner Super T-10's were put in Chevy's in 74 models and up. It's a nice tranny, very comparable to the Muncie, and yes, it has an aluminum case. The tranny itself will fit up fine as a Muncie replacement. The problem is, you'll have to enlarge the tunnel opening for your shifter (more forward I believe...can't remember) to make it work.
I'd use it though,..and simply weld a sheetmetal patch to reduce the gap in the tunnel.
Good luck!
BonzoHansen Sep 29th, 05, 10:51 AM I have been told there are iron and aluminum ones. Is that wrong?
The ST10 in my 77Z is aluminum, BTW.
Barry H Sep 29th, 05, 10:59 AM What gear ratio would you run with this trans and its 2.64 1st gear? 10-bolt, 8.2 posi rear. Thanks for all the comments, it also comes with a Hurst Comp Plus shifter and linkage. Barry

No - it's not wrong :beers:
From the Mid to Late 70's all GM ST-10's were the '903' Aluminum case. In the very late 70's until the early 80's they were the '904' Iron case.
All ST-10's sold by Borg-Warner 'over-the-counter' as their "Power-Brute" line were Iron (904) cases.
Barry;
Corvettes started getting BW's in March of 1974. Yours should be a "W" ratio coded unit with 2.64(1st), 1.75(2nd), 1.34(3rd) and 1.00(4th). Reverse is 2.55.
This same trans was used for both the 350 and the 454 that year.
They are good units and should work well.
Hope this helps;
John
ps: Have fun with your "PM" with pdq67... :beers:
JOHNWALKER Sep 29th, 05, 11:58 AM Its A Very Good Tranny. As Good As A Muncie And Will Feel The Same As Muncie M20 Or M21. I Had One For Years In My 68 Camaro With A 396 And It Ran Very Good On The Street.

Barry H Sep 29th, 05, 12:03 PM Thanks for the good comments, should be fun behind the good old 327.
Still looking for suggestions for rear gear. I've got 3.07 now, but personally think that somewhere between 3.31 and 3.55 would be best, what do you think? With the 3.07 I had to feather the clutch a lot to get out of the hole, but look out after that! Of course, with age I've settled down a bit and won't do as much messing up! LOL, but still want her to come off the line nice and have decent hi-way manners.
oger Sep 29th, 05, 02:17 PM The 2.64 is a real good street setup for a small block. The gear spread is not wide enough to kill the motor between shifts and first gear is low enough to get a street car going. I think you can make a shifter mounting plate that will put your shifter where it belongs.
Straight-line-69 Sep 29th, 05, 02:20 PM With the 2.64 first gear, I'd go with the 3:55's...with 26-27 inch rear tires, she'll turn about 2750 rpms at 60 mph (+/-), wich is not too bad.
