bertfam Sep 29th, 05, 09:14 PM Mike,
Looks good. Here's the breakdown:
7U148365 - 1967 Chevrolet Full Size (Bel Air, Biscayne, Impala, etc...) built in Lordstown, Ohio. VIN of the car was 148365.
P7E26 - Muncie 4 Speed Transmission assembled on May 26th, 1967
Side Cover (3884685) used in 66 and 67
Main Case (3885010) used in 66 and 67
Tail (3855784) used in late 65 through 70 (Except 1970 A body with M22)
However, the silicone scares me!

Amptech Sep 29th, 05, 10:21 PM OK Here's one for you..
main case # 3839606
center support # 3831752
side cover # 3952648
tail housing # 3846429
The main case has NO numbers on any pad, only a few letters/numbers stamped into the side cover mounting area and they are P08 21. The case has no drain plug only a fill plug. The area where the drain plug would be it cast there, just not drilled and tapped. Cannot find ANY info on these parts, can you help? Thanks Bill :waving:
Jonesy Sep 29th, 05, 10:37 PM main case # 3839606 = 1963-64 Muncie 7/8" bore for countershaft
center support # 3831752 = Muncie Mainshaft Bearing support assy 1963-65 (may be used in other years also)
side cover # 3952648 = 1963-65 Muncie short boss bolt-on type w/TCS switch on gears 3-4
tail housing # 3846429 = 1963-65 Muncie speedo is on drivers side
P0821 = Muncie 4spd Passenger car Aug 21
You may have to open it up to figure out of it is an M20, M21 or M22
Kurt S Sep 29th, 05, 10:51 PM 7U148365 - 1967 Chevrolet Full Size (Bel Air, Biscayne, Impala, etc...) built in Lordstown, Ohio. VIN of the car was 148365.
Ed,
The rest looks right, but pretty sure the VIN is for a 67 Firebird. :)
Amptech Sep 30th, 05, 01:12 AM Damn, Jonsey.. You're GOOD.. any telling what it was originally out of?? It is an M20, I think with a 2.56 first. :)
Jonesy Sep 30th, 05, 07:47 AM Not without a VIN stamping, that kind of leaves it wide open to most GM cars that came with a 4 spd manual trans. It would be stamped on the main case on the edge where you found the P0821 stamped. Could be on the top side?
bertfam Sep 30th, 05, 08:02 AM Kurt,
If Lordstown made Full Sized Chevys and Firebirds, how could you tell the difference? According to CBN, 1967 Full Sized Chevy VIN's built in Lordstown are "7U1xxxxxx", and apparently so are V8 Firebirds (http://www.autoinsurancetips.com/firebird_vin.htm)!! I'm confused again... Am I missing something???
Ed
Kurt S Sep 30th, 05, 08:56 AM I compared that VIN to other Firebirds and it matches up for that build timeframe. I have a little full-size data (not much!) and they look to have higher VIN's by then.
Other than that, no way to tell. :)
Amptech Sep 30th, 05, 10:45 AM WOW, those plastic pellets in the bead blaster do wonders.. Here's the rest of the numbers I found.. 824B7921. Thanks..
bertfam Sep 30th, 05, 10:59 AM Kurt,
WOW!!! That's VERY interesting. This means that there could theoretically be TWO transmissions stamped with the exact same information. One for a Chevy and one for a Pontiac.
For example, my 68 Camaro is VIN 124678L341778, so my Muncie 4 speed would be stamped "8L341778". Since this car was built in Van Nuys, and Firebirds were also built in Van Nuys, IF (a big if mind you, but possible), they built a 68 Firebird Coupe that had VIN 223378L341778 (or 223678L341778 for a Convertible), and it TOO had a Muncie 4 speed in it, it would also be stamped "8L341778". AND... Since they also built "Big cars" in Van Nuys, it's again theoretically possible that one of these could also have a Muncie 4 speed stamped with "8L341778"! (If they built that many big cars...)
I would imagine this applies to a lot of factories that built multiple models and makes. True?
How about Oldsmobile and Buicks? Is it possible that there could be several transmissions, from different makes and models, with the same exact stamping???
I realize there's a lot I've taken for granted here. For one, they probably didn't make that many Firebirds at the LA plant, and yes, the date codes of the transmissions would be way off, but hopefully, you get my idea...
Ed
Kurt S Sep 30th, 05, 09:30 PM Wouldn't happen like your example, because in 68 they started stamping the division as a prefix (18L, 28L, etc) and because Pontiac used different VIN seqencing than Camaro (no 8L3....).
But your example is very true for 67. I've seen several 67 LA trans' and you can't tell if it's for a big car or a Camaro. The VIN's were very close thruout the year.
