For those of you who live or have bought a car from or in New York state the little reg. card on the bottom left corner has vechile weight. I have one that says 3541lbs, (its a Z11)Been talking with a guy who has 2 Z11's also that says his say 3150lbs and 3240lbs??? What is the deal with this weight differance? one of his he says is a BB 396 car.
Was this just a quess and a way to figure tax? or could there be more to it?

I'm sure it's just some off-the-wall published weight that is used. I surely wouldn't believe what that little piece of paper says at all.
Mine says 3640.

Maybe they have a standard weight chart and add the registering owners weight to it.

Since NY registration fees are based on vehicle weight, I am surprised first gen camaros don't weigh 7000 lbs there. LOL.

That weight comes directly off the MSO (Manufacturer's Statement of Origin) which was sent to the dealer, and he had to give the DMV when he sold the car in order to apply for the first retail title; it's the manufacturer's stated shipping weight for that car and its options as produced. It assumes the weight of the car as shipped, with two gallons of gas in the tank.

so would it be safe to say if you have the original or a copy of the original registration you could possibly figure out what the car was? Most people will be concerend about motor and trans options.

I don't think I understand the question Chuck.
NY registration only shows 8 or 6 cyl, just like the VIN. Nothing else about the car is printed on them.

I believe he is saying that the wieght on the reg card may give a clue if the car was a SB or BB car because of one car wieghing more than the other because of the bigger and heavier motor...

Do you have a card like this? I got one for this car and one just like for a 1967 Chevy II nova I had.

I think JohnZ has it right but, I don't think you could tell what your was because of the many option combos. ex. disc brakes +26 lbs, p/s +28 lbs, am radio +8 lbs, m20 +16 lbs

Right. There are too many variables. I'd bet that the weight shown on the registration card (that small greenish card) is different from car to car. Mine was originally a 6 cyl. coupe with no options/trim at all. You would think the weight shown would be pretty low but it's shown on my registration as awfully high.
Go figure. I'm sure the DMV just pulled a number out of their rear when the car was first registered.

Chuck, that card IS the registration. You'll see the ownership transfer information on the back, where the current owner signs it when they sell the car. NY state didn't issue titles for cars before 1975. In NY, in order to register a car older than 1975, all that's needed is that card and proof of insurance.
