I'm thinking about driving 14 hours tomorrow to go look at and or purchase this car....Just wanted a bit of advice before I make the long haul...I'm looking to completely restore this...probably into a Z clone...

Whats a ballpark decent price?

Also he has tons of paperwork on the car but the vin plate is not original and was reissued by the CA DMV / CHP. He is the second owner and the original owners sons had a huge battle over who was going to get the car...turns out neither one got it....but one of them stole the vin tag....

Thanks, in Advance!

Dan -

I blew the cowl tag up and think I got most of the numbers off it. This is a plain jane, 327/210/glide car, originally with all tinted glass (1E), glide with a console (2MG), and large rear bumper guards and belts all deluxe (5BY). For what it's worth, the rear bumper guards are missing and the driver side door mirror is a 68-69 style. The paint (including stripe) and interior look to be correct, although there is something weird going on with the driver side front seat belt (got more knots than I have ever seen).

Okay, great it has documentation, but it has that goofy VIN plate. It also has 185K miles. Yeah, that's 4,800 some miles a year average, but I wouldn't call a car with almost 200K "low mileage". He hasn't done a whole lot to it, so I'd expect a lot of stuff to be pretty worn out.

I know what the market seems to be right now, and I know what documentation supposedly adds. I personaly would not drive 14 hours to see this car unless it was about $2500, but that's me. It should be a less than $10K car, well less. It's one that fully restored is probably a $10K to $13K car, from what I have seen.

For what you're talking about doing (z clone), I don't know why you'd want to pay the money that "documentation" is supposed to add.

Okay, I think I just saw his ad. $12K? Too much for a plain jane in need of complete restoration, in my book.

I think he would take 10K....but maybe thats too much too....

Though the pricing is crazy right now....

I have been looking for a long time for a West Coast 1st gen with original sheetmetal & No Rust....For an easier frame off resto....I can't find Nuttin!

I appreciate your insight!

I guess I'll keep looking!

If it were a "package" car, RS,SS, or RS/SS, then yes $12K needing all of it sounds good. A Plain Jane with a state issued VIN? About $6-$7K, with the VIN plate hurting more than anything else. With respect to my fellow TC members, if I could find any first gen car that was not a total roach for $2500, I'd buy them all day until my funds ran out. Those cars are just not out there in any quantity right now. There's a fella looking for a car for $5K on this site, and everyone just about laughed him off of the board because pricing is admittedly stupid right now. Or is it STOOPIT? :) I picked up a 69' roller we affectionately call the creampuff for about $2K, and it ONLY needed- full quarters, floor, roof, trunk pan, outers tailpan, and a complete front clip! Well, at least the rockers and rails were nice! :)

Bob - I assume you meant me about the $2,500 comment. All I meant was that for me to be willing to drive more than 14 hours, it would have to be a steal. And at $2,500, it would be. That's what I meant. Just the way I feel. And I don't feel dissed, just thought I'd better clarify...:)

No prob Eric, no dis meant. With the price of gas these days, $2500 might make sense for a 14 hour drive! Heck it could cost $300-$400 in fuel alone. I've gotten really lazy when searching for projects. If its not within 100 miles or so, I stay home. The creampuff was only about 20 miles from me. It was sad...the tow dolly was more structurally sound than the car!http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b339/belairbobs/69clunker.jpg
