I narrowed and rebuilt two 12 bolt rear axles a few months back, with very good success thanks to some members here. The axle under my Camaro works perfect still. Unfortunately, the other came apart during the second pass down the track last weekend.

I twisted both Superior axles at the splines about 10 degrees. The right axle twisted a bit out of alignment also, and caused the right axle gear to spall the bore in the case a bit. With the carrier case cleaned up, the new axle gear has some side-to-side play in it. Have I toasted the case? Any way to fix the case, or is it time for a whole new posi? Crap!!!!!!!!

Can't say without having it here, but it sounds like the case is toast. Is this one of the old original Eatons or is it a new one? How much torque were you putting through this thing to do that much damage?

Hi Freddie,

It is indeed the older 3 series carrier, but it *was* in excellent shape and freshly rebuilt. Torque is such an ugly word after an accident, but I was running a blown BBC in a very heavy car (old school '55).

When I place the new axle gear (w/o the pack) in the bore, I can move it noticably side to side. Not alot, but it IS wallowed out. The other side has a fit like a lifter bore. Not good I'm sure.

Maybe use for a driver? It took me a very long time to set up the gears in these rear ends..almost a whole weekend. I'd hate to spend that kind of time for naught. On the other hand, I hate to waste a usable case. What say you Freddie?

I wouldn't try to use this case in the same car again. If you broke it when it was in good condition just think what might happen now with it in this condition. If you cahnge the differential all you will have to reset is the backlash. The pinion depth will not change.
