View Full Version : fuel sender
stamatisg1977 Oct 8th, 05, 10:18 AM have a question
i have an autometer fuel level guage that is 0-ohm empty/90-ohm full
i put about 5 gallons of gas in the tank to test out the guage all of my connections are new clean and secure when i turned the key the needle went way past full. could it be that my sender is not a 0-90 ohm sender?
maybe the previous owners putz mechanic didnt put in the correct sender when they did a complete fuel system overhaul
thanks for any help
steve
JimM Oct 8th, 05, 10:33 AM if the meter goes way past full, then the wire from the guage to the sender is not connected somewhere, or the sender is bad (open). All GM cars of our age group used 90 ohm senders. also possible that the ground wire from the sender to the trunk floor is disconnected.
stamatisg1977 Oct 8th, 05, 11:02 AM thanks for the info jim,
it must be the sender all of my connections are good
i have a clear view of all the wiring in the car since all the seats and carpeting are removed from finally installing a new complete electrical system from american autowire.
the last time i dropped the tank i took special notice of the sender floatitself and raised and lowered the float and the metal tab that scrapes against the resistor coil didnt seem to have good contact if you know what i mean
(i hope). if you know the correct sender for a 69 350 4bbl 18 gallon tank please share
thanks again
steve
JimM Oct 8th, 05, 11:53 AM You can do a quick test without pulling the tank by grounding out the pin where the tan wire plugs into the harness (with the key on.) If the guage falls to empty, ya gotta pull the tank.
stamatisg1977 Oct 8th, 05, 03:13 PM so when i plug the harness in and turn the key just stick a wire in the back of the tan wire and ground it?
JimM Oct 8th, 05, 03:43 PM yes... stick it in with the tan wire, ground it to a tail light stud, needle should go to empty.
stamatisg1977 Oct 8th, 05, 04:18 PM ok so if it goes to empty, change the sender correct?
by the way checked out your pics
the convertible is beautiful
good luck with it :beers:
JimM Oct 8th, 05, 05:32 PM thanks... interior is going real slow.... think that's cause I can drive it without it.
And yes, assming the senders ground wire is good, change the sender.
stamatisg1977 Oct 8th, 05, 05:49 PM thanks jim..... me too nothing but dynamat in my interior
stamatisg1977 Oct 9th, 05, 11:23 AM ok jim the needle went to empty
new sender on the way
thanks

stamatisg1977 Oct 16th, 05, 01:51 PM ok now that the new sender is in everything works great, i put 5 gallons of fuel in what should the needle read on an 18 gallon tank?
im getting a reading of 1/8 tank. is this correct?
JimM Oct 16th, 05, 02:07 PM not unusual. Im generally put 10 gal in mine when it reads a quarter, it goes up to near full.
