View Full Version : MSD 6AL vs. Digital 6 plus

I just installed a new MSD Digital 6 + and found that my idle RPM in gear climbed from 900 to 1150 RPM. The 6AL I pulled out seemed to work fine other than an occaissional rough idle condition in real hot weather.

You guys think my old 6AL was going bad? Or is the new digital 6 plus that much better?

Base timing will have a big effect on idle speed. Did you mess with the distributor or reset the timing? If so that might explain it. Otherwise, perhaps the new ignition box is giving you a bit of idle advance.

LOL Garret, yeah, I guesss you are right. Last race of the season is next Saturday . . . forecast is for a high of 60 and sunny :D

I did not change anything with hte distributor, just plugged in the new box.

Did you drive it around with the new box? Or just make sure still would start? Thats a pretty big difference!

maybe it will get ya a 10.8!

Better technology, thus, better combustion from a more controlled spark energy given.

Keep an eye on plug wire resistances as the more energy transmitted, the shorter the life of the wire.

Eric, some of those Digital 6 boxes have a mind of their own. Make sure it isn't putting in advance that you don't have in your distributor or didn't program into the box.

I run the digital 6 plus in my car but can't comment on the comparison to the 6AL. You might ask MSD tech support if this is possible.

Honestly I don't expect an ET gain from the box, I expect to go 10's again on the motor with some cool air though . . . went 11.0's with mid-2000' DA air already, with this cool fall air and some high pressure look out!

I did drive it around a bit, it did continue to idle fast. I will check base timing -- I bet the timing is the issue -- an extra degree or two at idle will make a difference.
