What would be the average price range for a standard paint job? I am just looking for a range of a standard paint job with no body work. This would include door jams.

cheap paint job at Macco will run you about 1000 (even though they advertise 295 paint jobs try to get one). Sometimes you get a good paintjob, sometimes driving under dripping paint would be better, it's all in the ands of the guy with the gun. If your talking a bodyshop type paint job, they probably start at 5K and go up (quickly) from there. No body shop worth it's salt will paint over prep work done by others.

So your probably looking at a minimum of 5 to 7K for a basic single stage paint job, and it will probably be alot closer to the 7K number. The days of the 1000 to 2000 dollar paint job are long gone unless you can do it yourself.

It really pays to either have a friend in the business, or learn how to do it yourself. (which I was forced to do). As Mark says, a good paint job is between 5-7K,with many (including bodywork) approaching $10K. Its terribly expensive. Once the body shops finds out that you have an old car, the price mysteriously jumps up. If you are the self-taught type, I highly recommend the "paintucation" website. They also have a series of tapes that is great.

Ditto what was said. Really no such thing as a "paint job" on an older car. Once you start prepping, you typical find a lot of hidden unknown defects that were previously covers. The ole snowball starts rolling and get bigger and bigger.

I did mine myself last year. It broke down to $1000 for paint, $1000 for everything from sandpaper to buffing stuff to stripe stencils, $1500 for new doors and hood upper and lower front valences, another $500 for new trim and emblems. Course while it was apart, I redid the motor, detailed the heck out of the engine compartment, and am still in the process of replacing the entire interior (add another couple thousand, not counting anymore...) oh yea, about a thousand hours of labor, or at least it felt like it.

Turned out pretty good tho...

That strictly depends on your car, quality of the job, and how much you are willing to spend. Could run anywhere from $1K for a MAACO wash and paint to over $10K for a show type paint job.

We pretty much start at $4500 for paint work. Stripes and Jambs extra.

Bodywork cost is on top of that. On old cars, you cant really get a true estimate by just looking at the car. We've found some pretty scary stuff once you get into it. We let the customer know that we cant do a real estimate until we are able strip off whats there and find out whats underneath.

We strip every car down to bare metal. Wont have our work on top of something that someone else has done (who knows what). But we're backed by our paint mfgs, and give a warranty.
