View Full Version : Usefull gadgets for our Cars... add your favorite
click Jun 22nd, 04, 08:42 AM With over 15,000 members now, its not a bad idea to refresh the newer folks with some of the gadgets that we have all seen and used. From self made tools to cure a problem to a product thats just plain cool to use.
One TC member told us about an FM transmitter to play mp3 music over our FM radios in the camaros. I got one and use it all the time, as do my 2 girls in their cars. They are under $20 now too at most big box stores.
I came up with the cup holder idea out of frustration trying to keep coffee and pop from spilling since our old cars didnt address that issue very well.
Then I hated to spend a fortune for a clock so I installed a cheap clock motor in my dash clock, that runs on 1 AA battery and works like a charm too.
Im inviting others to post pics of their favorite gadgets that they enjoy using too.

boodlefoof Jun 22nd, 04, 11:18 AM I would add band-aids. :D Not so much FOR the car, but for me after working on the car. graemlins/clonk.gif
paulm Jun 22nd, 04, 11:50 AM Ya!!! And super glue too for when I cut my self really good but am too lazy to go in the house to wrap it up. Super glue (and an oily rag) keeps me from getting blood all over the camaro!! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
MrDanB Jun 22nd, 04, 05:04 PM I have found that a box of jelly doughnuts covered with confectioners sugar is an ideal snack after wrenchin' on the Camaro, see, the white sugar makes a protective barrier between the grease on your hands and the doughnut itself,so you don't get any grease in your mouth, also, when you go to open the door, no wife screamin about the messy doorhandle because the dog will lick the sugar off saving you the headache ;) But I haven't invented anything cool for the car yet, but i'll come up with something good sooner or later. Hmmm maybe a mooning antenna ball :D

jackr Jun 23rd, 04, 10:14 AM I have a stash of marbles. When being tailgated I flip them out over my roof one at a time. Works great.
paulm Jun 23rd, 04, 10:19 AM Great idea Jack!!! That would work really well in my car with the top down! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
rs1968ss Jun 24th, 04, 04:20 AM I bought the "Beverage Buddy" or whatever they called it. It was a 2 cup, cup holder that plugs into the ash tray. I hated it. It hit the radio knobs, covered up the gauges and would not allow me to shift. It sat in my garage for quite awhile until I was getting ready to throw it out and decided to "modify" it. I took the piece that inserted into the ash tray off and remounted it to the bottom of the cup holder. So instead of it running horizontal, it now runs vertically. I then cut off all but the last couple of inches and now it inserts into the seat belt clip area on the console. Out of the way of the shifter, radio and gauges. I even keep my existing console storage. I'll take a picture and post it if anyone is interested. I had it on the Power Tour and had several people ask me about it. My only complaint is that the cup holder openings are a little small.
click Jun 24th, 04, 05:22 AM IF interested? Heck yes Randy post a pic of it, Im having trouble imagining it right now, sounds cool.

Except that marbles aren't a normal part of a car, and you could get busted for that... a Harley riding friend of mine has a pocket full of nuts & bolts so that he can toss them at people that cut him off or "pretend" to not see him.

rs1968ss Jun 24th, 04, 02:27 PM As you can see, I mounted it a little too far back to open the console with it installed so I have to pull it out to open the lid. It needs to be about 1/2" forward. I'm thinking that I may just put a hinge on it instead so that it would fold away to allow the console to open.
click Jun 24th, 04, 02:46 PM Now thats cool Randy.. Im sure others will enjoy that idea alot.

Geezer Jun 25th, 04, 04:18 PM I kind of got away from adding non factory stuff after the early 70’s “Cal Custom” binge. Some of you may recall the door handles, window cranks, foot pedals that looked like chrome bare feet, small diameter padded steering wheels… In the mid 70’s I moved close to two large junkyards and spent much of my free time scavenging OEM parts for my 68 Camaro. I learned by trial and error that many GM parts interchange. If I ever get this last 67 Camaro finished and show it, It’ll probably drive the judges crazy trying to figure out what is original or correct. Off the top of my head: The 68 Firebird heater controls and wiring with the fiber optic cable to illuminate the left side panel mainly because repro 67 AC diaphragm switches weren’t available when I started. Cigarette lighter socket light I don’t know what from, Ignition switch light from a 68 Oldsmobile, chrome emergency brake release handle from a 68 Olds or Pontiac station wagon, power trunk release from a 66 Grand Prix, and many more things, some more, some less subtle than those.
