You need one that is rated for the frequency of the system you have. On that note, they all program differently. The most common being to put the key in the ignition and turn it to run, then push the vale (sp) switch a number of times (3 or 6) till it beeps, then push any button on the remote. What you really need to do though to make sure, is to read the manuel that came with the car; as like I said, they are all different and I don't know the programming for that specific car.

Then I'd suggest finding the manuel that came with the car. Sorry I can't help you any further because I don't own one of those cars. Hopefully someone else around here does and might be able to shed some light. Keep in mind though that reprogramming remotes isn't something that 95% of vehicle owners will ever have to do.

The procedure is in the owner's manual.

There is an FCC ID on the back of the remote. Your replacement remote needs to have the same code. You can get one from dealership, ..some auto parts stores now sell them ...do an internet search or try ebay. As said before, the procedure to re-program is in your owner's manual... BTW, it does not have to be a Chevrolet remote...any GM ( Buick, Pontiac, etc ) remote with the same FCC code should work ... But first, Make sure it it not a dead battery in remote ...

Check out the link below. The instructions are on that page and the FCC code for the 99 Chevy is there too.

Elvis,
There are several different ways to do it, they differ from vehicle to vehicle. Some of the remotes must be programmed by the dealer. If you have your owners manual, it might tell you how, but if it is like my 99 Tahoe, the owners manual only tells you how to "reset" the original ones. If you replace one, you have to get all of the remotes programmed at the same time. Mine involved jumpering a couple of wires in the ALDL connector and then following a procedure. Rather than guess and do some expensive damage to the vehicles computer, why not just go down to your dealer and ask them to print out the procedure for you. Thats what I did and they were happy to do it but .... I did buy the new remote from them also.

If it is the same as my 96 Trans Am it is a piece of cake and listed in the owners manual. If you don't have one you can probably get one off ebay for under $20. Going by memory: on the T/A I had to pull the radio fuse and turn the car off and on a few times quickly. Then you hold the lock/unlock buttons (on the remote) down for about 15 seconds. In that time the remote might cycle the locks. Then it should work fine.

On a side note, the folks I bought my T/A from said the catr did not have remote locks. I checked the options tag and the code was listed so I borrwed my spare 99 suburban remote and whala! I have remote access  Better yet, since the burb was not in range, the rest did not affect the cycling on it and now my remote also opens the Burb too. Very  Good Luck.

BTW my local dealer wanted to charge a half hour of shop rate to program my Suburban. For that money I bought the complete 4 volume shop manual off of Ebay :D

EDIT: Here is an Ebay deal for $3.99
