hi i just bought an 83 camaro z28 4 barrel carb 305, and the tranny was missin 1rst gear and like 4th. i bought it anways cause it was realy cheap, but when i tryed putting it in reverse, the shifter will not move at all now, its stuck between gears. i dont know much about transmissions or do i know if i have a 4 or 5 speed, i was wondering if i should have the trany rebuilt or i really want to put in a auto, what auto trans will fit? thanx for ur help...

It should be a stock, weak, 5-speed !!

Probably be better, cheaper AND easier to buy a recycled GOOD one and change them.

OK guy! Here is how I would do this!

Call around to at least three maybe four salvage yards and ask them for a price quote for a GOOD tranny for your YEAR/MOTOR car. You want at a min. some sort of WRITTEN warrantee so you can return it if it is like yours is now, but you will have to eat your labor if it is after driving it!!

ANd also go to several Chain Parts Stores AND ask them what a rebuilt tranny costs from them.

Then choose and pay your money and have fun installing it BUT do it safe!!
