View Full Version : How many CFM?
Rookobird Oct 15th, 05, 10:33 PM I'm looking at switching to electric cooling fans for my 69 SS350 W/Vintage Air. It will be in the range of 400 HP. How many CFM do I need? How much are the F*rd units compared to some of the ones at Summit or Jegs? Thanks for the help.
John
400bird Oct 16th, 05, 02:49 PM as much CFM as you can get
the ford fans from a taurus or mark 5 are about $100
the taurus is about 3000-3400 cfm and the mark 5 is 4000 cfm
you would end up paying about $350 for a dual fan setup from summit and if i remember right they are about 2200 cfm
so sorry to say it but i think you should put on a ford fan, i did, sadly
but the ford ones do work great
Rookobird Oct 21st, 05, 07:42 AM 400bird or anybody- those prices you quoted; where are they from? junkyard, e-bay or ford dealer?
Thanks,
John
norcalcamaro Oct 21st, 05, 08:43 AM Used would be ebay for around $30. I found mine on ebay for $25 I believe. If you want a brand new one I believe they are in the low $100 range.

$100 for a whole new assembly? That seems cheap. Does Ford carry new pigtails to wire them too?
69ratchvlle Oct 21st, 05, 10:37 AM What are the years to look for, for the mark 5 fans?
400bird Oct 21st, 05, 11:36 AM do a search here, you will find all the info you need
and $100 is dont think is the ford price, it is an aftermarket stock replacement
and for the pigtail go to a junk yard and get as much wiring harness as you can
and when you hooking either on of these up keep in mind that they draw about 70 amps so get a big enough relay to handle that and wire accordingly

Thanks... Just checked the price at auto zone for a 94 MK VIII. $93.99 with lifetime warranty... Not too bad..
:beers:
Edit: Sounded to good to be true, so I checked again. This isn't for the whole assy., just a motor.
400bird Oct 21st, 05, 04:33 PM if your going to use the Mark VIII fan i have heard that you will have problems with a long water pump
the mark VIII fan is something like 5" deep from memory
thats part of the reason why i went with the taurus fan
calicraig Nov 4th, 05, 07:17 AM So are you still running a fan off the water pump?
I was looking at dual electric fan kits with the idea that I would not use a regular fan.
Is that what you are doing or are you runniing both?
400bird Nov 4th, 05, 10:05 AM no i am not, these fans should pull more than enough air to cool by themselves
you should not need a mechanical fan along with a 3000 cfm electric fan
and either one of these there isnt enough room for one anyways
i looked into getting a universal dual electric fan kit
in my opinion they are a total rip off most of them like $400+ or about $100 if you buy a new taurus or $40 if you buy it used
calicraig Nov 4th, 05, 12:50 PM Sweet,,,,I will check that out....
BlackoutSteve Nov 4th, 05, 05:15 PM If you can fit one, a good ol' 7 blade OE clutch fan and shroud will move more CFM than any electric fan will and it won't load up your alternator. Switching from a clutch fan to an electric fan is going backwards in CFM. If a clutch can't keep things cool, consider a radiator with more capacity or consider the condition of your waterpump.
I had a radiator that was too small and a 16" Davies Craig WITH my clutch fan and shroud made NO difference.
I fitted additional cores to my radiator and removed the D/C fan and my 12:1 c/r 454 sits at 185-190F with a 180 thermostat. Maybe 200F in traffic.
