While I am not sure about the work done in a week, ya gotta love Foose working on the car with the other talent. Also, love those flames. Very cool.

What channel/program is this on???

Vintage 68
Apr 30th, 04, 06:54 AM
It's on the same chanel as "Rides" :D

TLC - http://tlc.discovery.com/fansites/overhaulin/overhaulin.html - airs on Tue.s @9:oo here, right after "Rides".

My wife thinks TLC stands for 'Tuesdays Ladies Clear-out'...
I become one with the couch until the "car guys" shows are over.

I like Fooses' work and he is in the car up to his elbows throught the whole build graemlins/thumbsup.gif

It is a great show!

Runs on The Learning Channel "TLC" Tuesdays, 9PM eastern.

It's on TLC (one of the Discovery channels). Their website on the Overhaulin' series is -

http://tlc.discovery.com/fansites/overhaulin/overhaulin.html

Since you can 'volunteer' someone's vehicle to be 'overhauled', I wonder what Chip & his cohorts would do to the 'Mule'?? Or better yet, if they could turn my Z into a Mule-clone in a week???

Apr 30th, 04, 10:01 AM
Is it just me or do the people that get "overhauled" seem less than surprised when they see their car? I would be comming off the walls if they did that to my car!! It would shock the hell out of me to have Chip Foose work on MY car!! I love the show but come on people!! Show some appreciation for what these incredible craftsman do!!! Did you see the Chevelle they did last week? They cut TWO sets of wheels (Budniks no less -designed by Foose!!) and a steering wheel to match!! They even got the guy to put HIS OWN license plate on his own car and he didn't figure it out! Wish someone would sign me up!!

I heard that this Camaro is owned by Ian Zeiring who is the actor who played "Steve" on Bevery Hills 90210(big car buff). He was the guy on the show who had the curly blonde hair and was labeled as an air head. Cool guy in real life.... he races in alot of the celebruty races with and against his pal Jason Preistly.

Best he could muster was a "cool - what happened to my engine?"

I agree - I got a couple around here they can come get - and then take their sweet time getting it back to me...
I just be happy as he11 I didn't have to do the work !

And they can lose the "I'm helping - Chip gave me a job (just to get out of his way sweety) to do" little eye-candy girl... and her stupid interviews of the 'real workers'.
Then there will be more time to show what they did on the car - huh Angel (come on buddy, get my back on this one!).

Love that flame work by Mike - he did the truck in the earlier show also.

I like the show, but I too would have mixed reactions if someone (even if they have incredible talent) took my car and modified it to their tastes. Part of the fun is doing it your own way.

They do that show local here.. the word on the street is that you have to know someone to get one there.. like a "friend of a friend" kind of thing..

Also the guy from OPG (original parts group) gave a big chunk of $$$$ to the show so thats why your seeing almost all chevies..

Fun show though.. saw the chevelle in person and it was quite nice. I wonder if these car will continue to be daily drivers smile.gif

I'm not sure where you got those pics, but that car is still supposed to be under wraps! As one of the A-team builders on that car, I would sincerely appreciate it if you could take those pics down until the night the show airs. I am not even allowed to post these on the shop's website where the car was built until the show airs!

Not tryng to be difficult...I will be more than happy to talk about the car, the show, and the build AFTER the show airs! You have no idea what went into making that car a reality in 7 days...especially considering what it started out as. Please feel free to e-mail me with questions...

Dude (it's okay to call you dude isn't it - we're both from CA...) :
'The bag is unsealed - the Cat is gone'... :D

This thing has now gone global...
Seriously, I received an e-mail from a friend in Southern France (yes-some of them still like us) asking me about the car already. He thought the show had already aired over here and asked if I had a Dvd of it to send him.

As you can tell from the thread - the guys here really like the show and look forward to seeing it every week.
With all due respect to your wishes - I believe it's to late.
Since you are not the source of the photos or the person who posted them I don't think you have much to worry about and niether do the shows producers, it can only serve to increase the viewership of the series.

In the words of the immortal "James Brown" ;)

"You know sometimes a man
Or a woman makes a mistake
Try to find a reason for making a mistake
But there is no reason for making a mistake
The only thing you do is when
You make a mistake is say I'm sorry
Take a man or a woman to say I'm sorry
And it takes a fool to walk away

So right here I want to say I'm sorry"...

I have honored your request for the time being and removed the pic's. Do me a favor and ask Chip what his dads ski boat was nicknamed (back in the late 70's maybe early 80's) and post back his answer please. A strange request I know but the answer will show you are who you claim to be or at least know Chip. Don't take this wrong but from time to time we get a troll droping in on the site.

Tell Chip I'm the guy that grew up in Goleta and hung out with the Southall's at the lake and his family use to camp and day beach with us. Bob Southall and Mike Shapiro worked for Sam at PD when it was at the airport by Nargan (place to buy kegs). I spent a lot of time at PD as a teen. I ran into Chip at the march goodguys in Pleasanton a couple years ago he was hanging with Chris Titus. We talked about the boat and the old days then, as well as Camaros... I've got an '86 El Camino you guys can hi-jack if you want.

That's cool, Dennis. I wasn't sure how to go about that. On one hand, the pics are out there on different forums, they've been seen, and on the other, I'm not here to make enemies.

I used to live in Lakeside and have been to American Muscle Cars before. I hope they have distanced them selves from a certine Body Shop in ****************** used to be. He is a ************ of him. I hope American Muscle cars is doing there own work onsite now.In the mid to late 90's *******************. The last article I saw in Carcraft or Super Chevy on 1/4 replacement I thought was good. I wish them luck as the owner of the shop when I was around there a few times was very nice guy, his affiliation with the two people I mentioned kept me from doing business. It still keeps a very close friend of mine still living in Elcajon away. If things have changed let me know.

It appears I have been called out...understandable, considering the claim. DjD, you have mail. If you go to the show's website on TLC, there's an application form to submit your car for "Overhaulin'"...but my 73 Camaro better get done first!

Vintage 68 - thanks for the welcome, although it should be a welcome back. Been a member for a few years, just haven't been here in a LONG while. ...and I hear what you're saying.

69ProTouring...thank you for your cooperation, although, as Vintage 68 already noted, the horse is already out of the barn I suppose. It's truly no skin off my nose if the pics are already out there, but I have been reminded continually by the show's executive producer NOT to post any pictures on the website until the show airs...I guess I'm a little disappointed and angry that someone didn't have the courtesy to respect the producer's wishes. I am just trying to build the pages in advance so I can post the all-new site and the car pics on the same night. I guess it would have been nice if it weren't all over the planet already...kind of takes the novelty away from it.

Joe - not sure when you left Lakeside (I actually no longer live there either, but I am still affiliated and involved with the business as a friend of Sal's...I'm active duty Marine Corps in NC right now, trying to get back out there ASAP), but it sounds like you missed AMC's growth spurt. I know the shop to which you are referring, and Sal cut that umbilical and started doing all of his body & paint work in-house in about 1999-2000 (in a separate facility). He has now re-located his entire operation to the J. Filippi Winery in Guasti (Fontana)...this happened in January this year.

Hey 76'maro, James - I guess I could have my wife submit the entry and act shocked if picked. I could get an emmy compared to the guy with the chevelle... Good luck on it if your entry is in... graemlins/beers.gif

A quick note for anyone dropping in on a board for the first time. Using a first and last name goes a long way (even just a first name) when it comes to credibility with admin's and even other board regulars. A long sig shows board experience but no name makes the old dogs ears perk up quickly. Typically someone afilliated with a large scale project, be it a website or a TV show or ?? folks like to be associated and known...

76maro, I can definitely appreciate what you're saying.

I can't wait to see the episode (and a lot more pics!), it's going to be great. The car looks fantastic.

And once again, I merely found them posted on another forum and thought they would be a hit here. The only reason I hosted them on my site is because they were huge. 1600x1200 I believe. I resized them so I wouldn't get in trouble for posting pics that were too big.

'Maro:

The 'welcome' was well meant and I'm glad you took it that way!
Anyway to give feedback to a show is a good thing.

Maybe Djd will allow the pics (or one - the engine?) to come back up after the episode is announced (v.s.aired) to help others know what's going on and increase interest in the show.

Please feel free to post back after the show air's with additional pics and specs on the Camaro - any additional info would be welcome.

BTW - did you like my choice of "artist" ?

Dennis (we've talked on the board before, ages ago...I don't know why my profile only says two posts, since I've posted here a lot more than that! I also registered before 2002), appreciate your response...I guess Tony e-mailed you as well. Didn't mean to make such waves with the whole thing...I've actually tried to stay relatively quiet about my involvement in the project to this point; I mean, what if I suck??!! LOL...I've not even posted anything about it in the general forums on the 2nd Gen board; only the admins and mods know about it, and I've known all of them long enough to not worry about anything more than friendly ribbing (when I suck). However, the revelation that pics of the car were at large startled me this morning, and I responded the way I did to show why I even cared. Next time I'll just walk out back and beat a hornet's nest with a short stick... ;)

69ProTouring - Once the show airs, feel free to show the pics again...and I'll put a few up myself. I'll also gladly answer any questions anyone has about the car, how it started, and what we did.

Oh yeah, and I won't be submitting my car...there's no way in Hell they'd attempt to pull one over on me since I've already participated in one episode. Plus, doing it myself is 90% of the fun.

Its a fun show and MUCH better than some of the other cruddy car based "reality" shows.. most shows on TV like this require you to be in their zone.. keeps production costs down.. (besides, this is where all the really good builders are ;) )

Y'all want to see a reaction, the surfer El Camino was something to see. Everyone was in tears. That kid loved what was done to his car..........awsome show...first time I have seen it.

Maro:
Good to know American has moved on, Sal is a good guy and has some talented people. Those other two guys ripped off my Car and a few other peoples cars right out of their body shop!!!!!!!!!!

I got my case settled and they both payed 3 times more than the car was worth but the fact that people do that kind of business is unthinkable. My friend has a car he would like to take to American because he has seen great work from them. I will let him know they are on their own and have nothing to do with these other "people" and that is about as kind as I can be.

I dunno, that kid with the Elky last night was beside himself. He was hugging everyone and bawlin' . . . I probably would be too . . . LOL

He seemed pretty grateful to me.

The guy with the 50 Merc last week I think was just in shock. I honestly think he just wanted to know where his old car was . . .

May 5th, 04, 11:41 AM
That Elky was the first show Ive seen, I loved it. Took an ugly 77 ElCamino and made it into a car to be proud of. I loved that 74 or 75 Laguna front end. I used to have a 74 S3 and just love the look of it. Now instead of his car just blending in, the guy will have to hire a body guard to watch it when its parked at the beach.
That kid was overwhelmed and the pride of those guys that did the work was obvious.
Cant wait to see the next one. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

May 7th, 04, 03:44 AM
Yeah, it's a great show and it's a shame they can't show more detail of what goes into the building of the cars. Not to pick on anyone, but a big part of the show in my mind is them picking people with cars that don't have the money to restore them, Ian has plenty of money so I'm surprised they took a celebrity's car.

DjD
May 7th, 04, 05:21 AM
The El Camino Surfer's hottie mom with the "My kids are all grown and I my maternal needs are crying out because I'm a lonely housewife with too much time on my hands, fit in your purse pup" gave me the impression they were not hurting for money... The comment she made about paying the $1000 impound to get the car back and fight to get it back later supported that too.

I downloaded the entry form, am thinking about submitting the wifes 2000 Impala. You have to agree to pay all the taxes on all the parts and supplies used. It's just like anything else you win. So if they put $30k in parts and materials into your car you've got to pay about $3k. That's a heck of a deal but many may not have several grand laying around... I'm sure there are lots of things that get considered in their choices.

camaroman7d
May 7th, 04, 05:43 AM
Dennis I agree, I saw the one with the surfer ElCamino and something about mommy with the little purse dog annoyed me. The car came out nice though for what it was (never cared for that body style). The kid was truely greatful and that was good to see. Foose is very talented.

I don't know that I would want one of my cars "overhauled" though. Maybe when I drag my 72 Nova home I will just have them do all the work and then I can sell it and build something else myself. Hummmmmm that sounds like a plan.

I wonder how nice the cars really are up close and personal, 1 week is not very long. I have seen some of the Monster Garage stuff up close and YIKES!! Not very nice even though they look good on TV. I just don't think Foose would put his name on something that wasn't top notch.

OK...... the "conspiracy" is OVER.... especially since Ian's car and a story covering the entire build up is a featured story on pg. 45-51 of the July issue of Super Chevy.

I personally think that it is time to put the photos back up......this is not watergate guys!

Honestly the "TOP SECRET" photos that leaked out did their job and made me want to see more of the car itself and the show. I took the bait..... hook-line-and-sinker even now that I have drooled over 16+ photos of the build up in the magazine.

Now that it's aired, comments? (other than I'm ugly and need to grow some hair) Yeah, I was the guy (James Brown, Master Car Builder...yeah right) with the REALLY short Marine haircut...because I am one ;)

If you want to see more on the car, go to American Muscle Cars' website at American Muscle Cars (http://www.americanmusclecars.net)...there's a few pics and some more particulars on what was done. Kind of short, but I could have written a novel on what was done. There was so much that I've probably forgotten as much as I remember.

Nice car for a seemingly nice guy, but honestly the series is getting old already IMO.

Let's see...next week will be some guy who knows somebody, he will just happen to have a car, Chip Foose and a dozen or more pro's will work "around the clock" and you guessed it get it done with 3 minutes to spare.

Oh... I forgot about the "wonder-twins" .... form of a corn/shape of a ball "hosts".... In my opinion the music track is now the coolest part of the show after just 4 episodes..... tisk tisk

I like the show, I just wish they would keep it to the 'regular guy'

I was a little disapointed in the show. It's by far the BEST car yet, but the worst editing and story line so far. The producers spent way too much time showing the guys fighting, the POS frame, and the setup of Ian when they should have been focusing MORE on the car, IMO. This isn't American Chopper. LOL

Getting back to the 68, that car is fantastic. You guys did one hell of a job. There were SO many details that were only mentioned briefly, let alone just plain missed or edited out by the producers.

Doh! I missed it, I was at a cruise night here in NJ. Car looks pretty sweet and those flames look awesome.

looked like a great car... but I was a little bit disappointed with the show itself. They didn't really show any work being done on it, nor did they explain any of what was being done to the car. It looked like they were putting in a 4-bar setup out back... there was also one point where there appeared to be large squared tubing going into the trunk, then it was gone later... didn't catch what that was about.

I'm like you Boodlefoof, I like to see some of the actual work going on (like on American Hot Rod)My guess is that they don't show much of the actual work because they feel it would cause boredom for the majority of viewers who are only interested in seeing the "before" and "after"....

Actaully Granny, this show was a departure from what they have been showing. In prior shows, the car was the focus, but in this episode, it was all about the clashing of team members.

As a builder on the car, I too was disappointed in the amount of work that they actually showed getting done...but I guess that's not entertaining enough. I mean, they didn't even show ANY of the building of the front subframe, installation of the motor, fabrication of the custom tranny crossmember, etc... It's supposed to be a docudrama (with emphasis on the drama, I guess) rather than a documentary. Still, having watched all of the episodes, I felt they showed more of the process than they had on previous shows. They did leave out sooooo much, though.

On the rear suspension...it is a 4-link setup. The car came to us minus rear frame rails and mini-tubbed, and with some of the underbody stiffening panels (including the area the convertible body brace bolts to) cut out...it was a mess. Worse, the C4 suspension based frame Ian had paid for was junk...so there was NO body rigidity at all. The Stitz guys fabricated an inner framework and frame rails out of square tubing (and one piece of round tubing that went over the driveshaft tunnel) that ran from inside the trunk, through the rear seat divider to behind and below the rear seat area, and hung the 4-link from that. Because of the state of the full-frame chassis that was originally supposed to be used, we ended up using a stock front subframe (that none of us were happy using) that I spent the better part of the first day locating...straight ones are hard to come by. We hung Global West control arms & sway bar, Del-a-Lum bushings, and Baer brakes on it, and tied it into the rear suspension with Global West weld-in subframe connectors.

The conflict between Stitz and Jim Sleeper was over what the rear suspension was designed to do...Jim wanted more of a racing set-up (which was Ian's original plan), and the 4-link was set up as more of a street suspension. Now, though, Sleepy and Aaron are bosom buddies...I think they focused on that conflict too much, but it was a significant factor in the first half of the week. It was just taking too long for Stitz to get the rear end together, and it was holding some other things up.

I unfortunately don't have any decent photos of the completed interior. Suffice it to say that it came out very nice...I wish I had the talent to do thst kind of work to my own cars.

Thanks for the follow up, 76maro. I hope I didn't sound like I was whining too bad, LOL. When the re-run airs, I'll watch it again. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

They mentioned that the subframe mounts were cut off the body, right? How did you rememdy that?

Do you know the specs on the motor, tranny and rear end? Just curious, thanks!

It was nice to see a 68 Camaro worked on, though there wasn't much "in depth" shots. The car turned out nice but, if that was to happen to my car, I would freak out, and not in a good way.  graemlins/sad.gif T

Not so fast. I didn't think I liked that custom look until I saw the yellow spaceship on ebay. Fender skirts and a continental kit on a first generation. I've found my purpose. Imagine what Chip would say if that was the owner's wish.

76'Maro,

thanks for the info. I did notice a stock subframe sitting in the shop during part of the show, but they never mentioned anything about it.

I was kind of surprised you all didn't just go with leaf springs given the time crunch... but hey if you all could build it that quickly, I'll take one! ;)

Seen the show for the first time last night. Show sucked IMO,but the final product was very nice. I didn't care for the consol or trunk, but otherwise was a sweet looking car. I will watch it again and can only hope its better.

69pro - the engine is a 406 cid SBC with AFR heads, F.A.S.T. fuel injection, Doug Thorley tri-y headers, etc. We did NOT build the motor for the show...it was already done, just added the brackets, pulleys, accessories, sensors, etc. Tranny is a Kaiser built T56, custom driveshaft, into a custom built 9-in rear end with (I THINK) 4.11:1 gears. I don't know what that id10t was talking about on the subframe mounts...I don't recall having any problem bolting it all up! The underside of the car WAS definitely boogered up pretty good, though...had to fabricate and weld in place brackets to bolt the body brace to.

Leaf springs? No rear frame rails...and it would never have achieved the handling we were trying to get to with leafs.

Dennis, you're right...if you want it stock appearing, Chip's NOT your man!

I think you mean "Keisler"... most 'Kaiser's' had 3 speeds - :D

Car came out very nice considering what it looks like you had to start with.
I like the efforts to keep the overall lines of the car stock - and still add all the performance he was looking for.

Do you know if the new shop is in the same Winery buildings that they used to film the 'Combat' TV show in - It looks familiar for some reason. I used to spend a lot of time in that area.

Bet it was a lot of fun to be involved with the thrash-build graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Thanks for the additional photos and information.

Okay... I like the show except for all the bogus phony phone calls. This time could be better spent showing the build-up... IMHO.

Anyway, seems like the show Overhauled selects "intelligent and talented" builders rather than the immature adolescence types that Jesse James selects. After watching Jesse's teams... I bet a lot of viewers think that Car Builders are just a bunch of Dorks with tattoos. THANK YOU OVERHAULDED!

Lets see... Pimp my Ride, Monster Car Garage, American Hot Rod and sometimes "Rides"... silly (but I watch them every week!!!!).

Overhauled... a nice change graemlins/beers.gif

'76 Maro,

I may have missed it but is there any chance of getting any more info on the tonneu cover that Chip made. I have been wanting something like that for my car for a long time. Great show by the way.

Good question Bob!! I was wondering if they even addressed the top at all during the show. In the hotrod world it's common place to build a car without a top at all. I kind figured this one might be that way...

May 13th, 04, 08:03 AM
i saw the show and the tonneu cover and it doesnt seem to be able to fit a vert with the top frame. in the show, the cover seems to be laying flat in the well area like there was no top frame installed. 'maro, can you expand on this? it does look cool but to me, it didnt seem to have all the vert parts.

The docu-drama part is the part my wife enjoys. this one and Rides are the only two that she won't get up and walk out on. That's a compliment BTW . . .

It would be nice though if they could take this show on the road and suprise a real every-day gear head in Minoc, ND; Moosejaw, SK; or some other out of the way place --- like Kentwood, MI ;) LOL

PS. agree -- best flames I've ever seen.

Yes, the tonneau cover was an interesting piece. We decided early in the build that detailing, assembling, and covering the vert top was just not going to be feasible in the time allotted with everything else that had to be done, AND we weren't sure in the beginning how the rear suspension setup was going to be done and if it would accommodate the top...so the top is NOT under that cover. Chip decided to do the "roadster" thing with it instead (which is just another name for a convertible with no top ;) ) The framework was hand fabricated by Chip with a hammer and a stump and a TIG welder at about 2 a.m. (you can see him working on it in a quick shot on the show...). It was amazing to watch...I felt like a midget among giants. Anyway, once the framework was welded together, Stitchcraft covered it with some hard foam for smoothness and covered it in the same grain vinyl the seats are done in. I don't recall off hand exactly how it is supported and secured in the boot area...as I said, it was early in the morning, and I think that's the same night I built the core support, headlight system and grill, and me and Josh stabbed the front chassis, engine, and transmission.

76'maro, Some questions:

1) Is it true that it only takes one week for these things? I find that hard to beleive. Even the Pro's ocasionally go backwards on resto's.

2) Any incling on the budget? I know this is a hard one to answer (are we plus $200k?)

3) If something goes wrong afterwards, who's responsible?

4) Nice work! I'm sure your very proud. What kind of guy is Foose? Is he open to ideas? or is he a "my way or the Highway" kind of guy?

Again, fantastic car!!!

John,

1) Yes it's true...1 week from start to finish. I'll be honest and say that some of the finer details are not always completed, but the car runs and drives at the end of that 7 days. It was a long week...I got MAYBE 10 hours of sleep the entire week. I know ALL about going backwards on restos. I actually think in some ways a custom like this is easier than a resto...fewer restraints, more room for "creative" solutions.

2) Budget? Hhhmmm...not really sure. I know a LARGE number of parts are "donated", so no cost involved...I know I was on the phone with Ashley and Jeff at Classic a LOT! Every time I thought my parts list was completed, I thought of something else I hadn't already seen on the shelf. This project was a little different than the others in that Ian had already paid for a lot of parts and services that were actually performed on the show.

3) So far, everyone that has worked on these projects is guranteeing their work...if its got to be fixed or re-done, they do it. These cars will be making the show circuit, so it's in the builder's best interest to keep their name in good standing with Overhaulin' in order to continue to take advantage of the exposure. Just good business. Something tells me that Chip would take care of any problem that a builder didn't back.

4) Chip turned out to be a great person. For someone with so much creative and technical talent, and so much notoriety for his achievements, he was VERY unassuming and humble. This build was a little different in that he wasn't there for the entire thing...he left for 2 days with the producer to scout the next project (at WyoTech), and he actually felt guilty that he hadn't been there for everything. I thought he was a stand up guy, and a quiet, thoughtful person. After I got to know him a little bit, I have a lot of respect for him. He even sent me one of his shirts, which I got the other day...a little thing, but to him, who am I? Didn't have to a thing for me, but he did anyway. The type of person I could easily work with again.
