Had a car in the shop this week with a broken timing belt. the valves hit the pistons and smashed them into the head and cracked 3 guides. i will post some pics on monday. anyone out there got any interesting pics of something coming apart?

haha.... no pics.... but I still got the piston and rod outa a 69 vetter to remind me that rod knocks only go away 2 ways... and this was the bad way... darned rod looks like a pretzel, big end is smaller than the small end, too.

I have pictures of what happens to a piston when a ball bearing finds it's way into the motor.. Cracks, indentions, and other things a man should not have to witness. I should have taken pictures of the head, but I already sent it off to get it welded up.

I borrowed my father in laws Sears 20" chain saw for taking out a few dead trees last week, worked fine last weekend but this Sat. I used it again and while cutting thru pulpy dead stump at high speed it just went "urp" and locked up tight as a drum, smoke coming from all over it. The rewind wont turn but the clutch is free so I froze it up good, guessing bearing or piston sieze... oh well it was 15 years old. Went and bought a new Poulan today :) works great .

Same here, but with my 20 year old snow blower two winters ago. Something popped out of the side of the crankcase. :clonk:

That's happened twice in the last two years with my Craftsman lawn mowers.

Heres a few of a 383 from my painter/partners car. Keep in mind that this was at 12-1500 rpm:

We took the rest of it apart tonite, and the crank is in 5 seperate pieces  . Didnt have my dig cam with me, but I'll get pics of "them" in the next few days. Top end of the motor seems to be okay.

Yeah. I started it up, and after 10 seconds or so, gave it a little bit of throttle to keep it running (cold), and it just "CLANG"ed. Pretty uneventful, really. Wouldve been BIG at high RPM.

It was a Scat crank. Paperwork said "cast steel forged crank". ???? Looking at the lines on it, it looks to be cast. Not as wide as the forged ones Ive seen. But I'm not much of an engine guy. I dont think a forged crank would come apart that much, though.

We definately werent heartbroken about it. Its been a "problem child" since it started life as a crate engine, and after a rebuild.
