69camarofast Oct 24th, 05, 01:10 AM Does any one else have this problem? I like to take out my Camaro on the weekends..even if its just for a ride ..or on the freeways..or just a nice Sunday run. Sometimes in search of other Muscle cars, trying to catch up to them...The problem is, i use to go alone or with my youngest son..I would just about have to beg my wife to go with me...then she tells me to invite her...so i do..but she doesn't like the way i shift or drive...These cars where built to street race...basicly...and we kind of help it along with all the extras..but you have to shift, and give plenty of gas to keep these monsters "happy" so am i the only one with these kinds of issues? she has gotten better in time ..now she doesn't say much ...but at least we are together and with time im hopeing she will enjoy the car as much as i do...Please let me know if you guys also face this,Thanks, i will be waiting for your respose...dont baby them drive'em... :D
nikkisdad Oct 24th, 05, 01:41 AM My wife gets real nervous when I put the right down left out. However my daughter cant get enough of my L78 with 4.88 gears and a 4 speed! I worry about her, ever since I showed her how to spin out in her go cart as a child, she has become a very aggresive driver wanting to go faster and faster. She is now 16 and wants me to build her a race car, demo derby cars, all the things dad used to do. She is very safe driver in regular traffic, but I think I have created a monster!
mountainman Oct 24th, 05, 06:24 AM Hi guys, and girls... my wife was always on pins and needles when I had a 94 Impala SS well one day I sat in the passenger seat she drove it loved and got her first speeding ticket, so let her drive and feel the power, and I too have a motor head daughter who is begging me to put nitro in the camaro good luck
tmannet Oct 24th, 05, 06:36 AM Ah, finally a topic I can contribute to! When I had my '67 and more recently '68 Camaro, my wife rarely rode in the car, if she did she'd sit quietly and say nothing...which means she was thinking about my 'priorities.' It was ALWAYS my son and me going cruising... One of her favorite daggers was always 'you have $15,000 dollars in that car that you can't even drive in rain or snow." (I never told her I had $25,000 in it!). Last month when I sold it, as the buyer was loading it up on the flatbed truck my wife came out and said, 'I never got to drive that car.' I CAN'T WIN!

MrDanB Oct 24th, 05, 07:12 AM I bought my 69 car about 2 days after we bought our first house in 2000 (it was brand new)...She was severely p.o'd that I brought "that p.o.s." into our new garage. Now that it's all fixed up, things are different and she will hang out with me in the car, but more imprtantly, she now knows that it's MY garage and she is welcome to go through it to go in/out of the house :D
Dano :beers:

JimM Oct 24th, 05, 07:56 AM My wife is very glad that I have a hobby I enjoy. She never begrudges me a dime that I put into it, I always discuss major purchases with her first. She is happy to "inspect my work" and voice her appreciation... but...
She don't ride in it much.
It's too:
noisy
windy
Jerky (i can shift very smoothly when I want to....)
And it suffers from a severe lack of cupholders, and she never leaves the house without her daybreaker full of gatorade!
HwyStarJoe Oct 24th, 05, 07:58 AM I guess I'm fortunate.... my wife has a heavy right foot. She'll be begging me to let her drive when it's finally on the road.
She gets nervous when I go WOT in anything I drive, but when I had her in the passenger seat of a buddys '79 Trans Am and was squirreling it sideways around corners, I know she had a blast.
As long as the kid isn't in the car with us, she's all for feeling "the power".
click Oct 24th, 05, 08:18 AM Mrs. Click asks me 'when are we going for a ride?' all the time. She knows that when I 'get the carbon out' on each trip that its for the good of the engine since it sits alot :) She loved driving it to Seattle but she is content to sit and read or rubber neck at the people giving us thumbs up. If "WE" didnt enjoy riding in it, I dont think I'd still own it. Kids also love it when they ride along on occasion and I let it chirp the tires going into 2nd. Their ricer buddies cant do that :)
djunod Oct 24th, 05, 09:56 AM She loved the '70 Camaro that we had years ago while we lived in St.Louis... she would race people from the red lights. She still talks about that now & then to this day.
My wife is scared to death of my '68. Her main complaint was lack of seat belts. She may like it better this time around when I get it back together... I got high back seats that mildly wrap around you (very similar to Corvette seats) & 3-point seat belts.
She loves my son's '65 Malibu SS... we get it back from him in January... she's says that she'll drive that car to shows, while I drive the Camaro.

Must be an Illinois girl thing. My wife is very cool about my 67 project. We went to the The Parts Place, In Elburn, Illinois on Friday, and I got some new stuff. We went for a fender, and left with new rocker moldings, gauge bezel (speedo/tach holder) and new wheel well moldings..and the fender. She suggested that I get these parts since we were already there, and it would save a lot on shipping. How could I argue with that. She is so cool, and patient. She is looking forward to driving it next summer.
PS. The Parts Place is a good place to do business. Very helpful, and god prices.
jackr Oct 24th, 05, 10:59 AM My wife has been a partner in my hobby for 20+ years now. Lately, she very seldom has any input as I think she is indifferent at this point. I have heard her say that she wants another 66 mustang though. Since they are a bunch less expensive to get than any vintage chevy I may have one in the garage soon. I wonder if she'll race me?
DjD Oct 24th, 05, 11:31 AM It all depends on what you are willing to risk... I see mothers that buckle themselves in but let the kids bounce all over the car. If you want to risk something on the street with your family in the car it's your choice. I know we pride ourselves in having our kids involved in the things we are and I know most of the time we are able to have a bit of fun without getting hurt. What do you do if something goes wrong? I realize everything we do has a risk factor from walking across the street to downhill skiing or motocrossing... Anyway not finding fault just asking you to think about it the next time you go gear banging with the wife and kids in the car...
These cars were transportation when they were first sold and most were not high powered. They can be driven normal when the wife and kids are in the car and you'll find the wife more willing to go along. Save the gear slinging for solo runs on back roads where your safety is least impacted by others and if something happens nobody else is involved.
69L65-4spd Oct 24th, 05, 12:18 PM God forbid if I ever chirp the tires. She doesn't mind when we take it out for a short cruise and a stop at the local Sonic or Baskin Robbins. But she feels to conspicious and besides, it draws enough attention as it is Hugger orange. She says that the kids are always looking at the car and gets a little uncomfortable. Doesn't bother me!
Soooo... many of my outing are by myself. I'd rather have her with me as my working 2nd shift keeps us apart much of the time. But we manage to find time on the weekends, occasionally. Well, snow season is almost here. Time to put the cover back on it till spring. J.R.
slowdrive Oct 24th, 05, 01:14 PM lol, the 69 is her car, we will see how things change when she is driving her own "fast" car........then I will have to bring up all the things she used to say when we were cruising in my car.......now that I think about that, I hope the no nooky time doesn't last to long hehehe
P.S. She aways says she hates how she "smells" like the car after we go for a drive I think they need to make a Cam II aftershave http://www.camaros.net/forums/images/icons/icon10.gif
ktaylor36 Oct 24th, 05, 01:55 PM No Wife but girlfriend of 5 years... She loves going to car shows and cruising. She gets a little scared when I do a 4th gear WOT run (but I can't blame her I do too...) Her dad was into cars (had a 69Z and a plain jain 6 rotting in the back yard a few years before I meet her). She has been harping on me to buy her uncles mid 70's corvette with t-tops for her.. Will probably do it after we get married just so I have no future cruising issues.. Having someone that is not into cars as a partner is hard.. Lets face it most of us are addicted to our cars and having someone always harp on your about it can be pretty tough.. My stepmother never cruises with my dad and I feel bad because he is always like hey can I tag along in my car.. (32 ford 5 window, but it has a chevy TPI engine in it :> ) But I feel lucky that my girlfriend is into cars and lets me cruise and comes too.
BonzoHansen Oct 24th, 05, 02:11 PM My wife is the reason my 67 was originally planned as a 200R4 setup. She can’t drive a stick. She wants to be able to drive it. But I don’t see her spending hours at a show. The boys should take up that slack (I hope). Her role is likely to be cruising, local shows and getting ice cream, as mentioned.
But now I like the stick in the 77, so those plans for the 200r4 might be out...it is a factory 4-speed car for goodness sakes. Even though all I have is the pedal assembly. :)
KevinW Oct 24th, 05, 02:50 PM My wife is a gearhead too. Kinda forced me to buy my 69 Camaro driver and lets me know about everytime I show her the prices of 69 convertibles :) She wants to learn to weld, so she can work on her 51 chevy pickup project. We are going to put a 383/TKO in it. That truck will be a little scary, but she wants a stick  It will be stock looking and I will hide the modern upgrades :D She cannot wait for me to finish my Camaro projects so her truck can come into the main garage from the detached one and get worked on.
tmannet Oct 24th, 05, 02:53 PM Geez, where did you guys find gear head wives?!?
click Oct 24th, 05, 03:16 PM In the " GEAR HEAD WIFE " dept. at NAPA :)
ORENCH Oct 24th, 05, 03:24 PM My wife doesn't have any problem at all, if I ask Her to ride in the Camaro with me, but there's one thing I don't like... She wants the a/c on all the time. I don't get it, I prefer to hear the noise of the flowmasters, rather than driving with the windows up all the time. For that sole reason, she doesn't ride with me 100% of the time, but she doesn't complaint either.:D She's very suportive, when is related to the Camaro, but she's starting to hate an unfinished project, in the yard and another one occupying her car's parking space in the garage. I promised her the garage will be free by this month's end.
BTW, my daugthers(15 & 9) are like me, they love to ride in the Camaro, no matter the conditions. They are pure breed.
Scott Taylor Oct 24th, 05, 04:02 PM My wife won't sit around all day at a car show with me, but she does like the attention she gets when she drives the car (which is rare). Every once in a while we'll strap the kids in the back and go for a Sunday drive, and she enjoys that, as do the kids. She's definately not a gear head though, by any stretch of the imaginization, in fact I'm pretty sure she doesn't know the difference between a spark plug and a freeze plug. I still love her though.
69lemans Oct 24th, 05, 04:45 PM My wife drives her camaro harder then I drive mine, as she puts it, "she has to let her car breath " when she takes it out. 2 days after we bought it she told me it will chirp the tires in 4th gear. Ya gotta love a woman that loves muscle cars.
DOUG G Oct 24th, 05, 04:58 PM Mines just happy I'm not sitting in a bar somewhere. She just deals with it (noise, smell, and time away from her)
69 350 SS Oct 24th, 05, 05:49 PM No problems with me , She gave up on me along time ago
