Did that look staged to anyone but me? I realize the safety rules and inspections are different in a 12.30 car compared to a 9.30 car but the seat and driver leaving the car in a rollover of a purpose built drag car seams a little over the top. The launch was very poor and the car started to weave at a relatively low speed. After crossing the center line, why would the driver keep his foot in it? Maybe I'm looking for something that isn't there.

If that was staged that guy has a job in Hollywood. If you watch the old CHiPS TV show when they rolled a car there was always a cage in it so I don't think the driver was that nuts to try it with out one. When I was building my car I looked at a lot of cars at the drags and some of the things I saw were crazy , fiberglass bucket seat bolted to the floor no support just four bolts , old seat belts, brakelines on headers. Could have been his seat wasn't bolted in that good and his stock seat belt (lap belt) was not tight. That guy is lucky to be alive.

That is one lucky SOB... Looks to me like the car was slapped together in a hurry just to go to the track. Like Rich said, looks like the seat wasn't bolted in very well.

He was fine until he got back into it.

My first thought as I watched was "Why did he get back in the throttle?", but you know how your speed judgement changes. He probably thought he was going slower than he was, like when you lay down a bike and try to stand up while you are still sliding on the ground. Then I thought "Man doesn't he know about seat belts" :)
I like how he got to watch his own car roll. He was almost back on his feet before his seat even hit the ground! Lucky SOB for sure!

I was there when it happenedand watched the whole thing. The car belonged to his son and this was the dads first pass in the car. The seats were tack welded to the floor along with the belts. really bad. We think the seat broke loose from the floor as he tried to turn it back into the lane and lurched him against the gas pedal.
This was 1988 just before Fremont closed.

Holy Cow! That dude is lucky. He should have been squashed like a grape but was spared. And people wonder why they have to go through tech inspections before racing.

that guy is sooo freakin lucky. obviously he was out of his mind getting back on it, out of the groove hell, he was out of his lane!
but beyond that, the guy in charge of tech that day should be slapped about the head and neck, not only was the seat and belt clearly not right, the thing was bouncing around like it had no suspension and just generally looked scary sitting still. just wow :clonk:
