View Full Version : RS Skirt Drilling help!
JEFFMB Oct 26th, 05, 08:17 PM Hi folks, I am adding a RS hideaways to my 68 SS 396 Convertible, I was wondering if anyone has a template for the drilling of the skirts, the assembly manual is very vauge on hole placement. :clonk:
thanks
Jeff
makoshark Oct 26th, 05, 09:20 PM Rick`s sells templates for everything to attach to the body of a camaro.
JEFFMB Oct 26th, 05, 11:17 PM I think they only have them for emblems and such, I need one for the bellcrank hole in the front of the skirt for the RS headlamp pods.
makoshark Oct 26th, 05, 11:41 PM When you say drilling the skirts? What exactly are you talking about? If someone else doesn`t pop in here with the correct answer for you. I could possibly have it for you in a couple of days
shoddy_F-body Oct 27th, 05, 06:28 AM Hes looking for where to drill the holes in the front wheelhouse for RS bellcrank clearance.
foreverlookin Oct 27th, 05, 07:07 AM Just went through this myself as repo inner skirts do not have dimples as a guidline for drilling. I mounted head light pods and marked and drilled, used a 1 1/2" hole saw for bellcrank holes. Gramps68 sent me some pics with measurements which were very helpful. Just take your time and double check locations before you drill.
click Oct 27th, 05, 08:37 AM maybe these pics can help you out for a visual but I dont have measurements of holes, sorry. :beers:

JEFFMB Oct 27th, 05, 09:37 AM Any chance you can make me a template? I'd pay you!, heck if they come out come out good we can help others in the same boat. just a paper template would be great.
Thanks
Jeff
click Oct 27th, 05, 12:59 PM yes its my 69 and its all put back together now, the pics were taken last winter during project time here in Minnesota. Wont be able to make templates now sorry :(
JEFFMB Oct 27th, 05, 01:06 PM Hi Jim, I don't think it would work as the skirts on a 68 are different, I do have a question regarding your method of gunk and rust removal from your frame and skirts, did you wire wheel it? looks like you spent lots of time and labor on that, Instead of tearing down to nothing and beadblasting it all, I was thinking of going the wire wheel route, and tips would be great, thanks, Jeff
makoshark Oct 27th, 05, 03:02 PM Give me a couple of days Jeff and I`ll get you what you need. I thought that was what you meant, but was wanting to make sure.
shoddy_F-body Oct 27th, 05, 04:32 PM Templates would be great if someone could make them! I made templates for drilling the subframe bushing mount holes and have been sending to members who need them. We dont need no stinkin supplier to make em and sell them to us. ;)
click Oct 27th, 05, 05:11 PM All the detailing I did was with wire wheels, cup brushes and 3M sanding pads and elbow grease. My fenders were aligned to nicely to take them off and risk not getting them back on right, plus I dont have a blaster or compressor and its deep snow in winter here so I cant drive it to get work done on it. Everything was done as it sat in the garage with skinned fingers and POR paint for final coat.
A long bit holder extension to hold a small cup brush will reach back into areas you cant get at with a wire wheel.
MI68 Aug 10th, 06, 04:09 AM Jeff I know it's been a while since you posted this, but I was wondering if you ever got that template information? I have the front end completly off my 68 RS and should be able to assist if you still need help.
clwilcox33 Aug 10th, 06, 05:20 AM MI68, I never saw a template posted. If you want to draw one up, I'd be happy to host it online for members to download.
cpodeep Aug 10th, 06, 10:27 AM Hi Christropher,
If push comes to shove anyone needing RS wheel houses can order them for Ricks, I ordered mine from there. They have a guy who takes regular wheelhouses and drills them to the right measurements. I have a pair in my basement so it anyone needs measurements let me know
BPOS Aug 10th, 06, 10:52 AM I just did this on my 69 convert - it's not that tough.
Remove the bellcrank from the headlight housings. Keep track of where the bushings and washers go. Mock the entire frontend up so that you're happy with the way the doors align, open and close, etc.. I had to shim the headlight housings away from the rad support a bit to make mine line up correctly. With the headlight buckets in place and bolted to the rad support exactly where you want them, take a short pencil and going through the headlight opening, mark through the hole that is used to mount the bellcrank at the bottom on the headlight housing. You'll wind up with a circle about the size of a dime. Now you can take the headlight housing off and drill the hole. An angle drill work well here. I have a short regular air drill that I used. I used a 1 1/2" holesaw. The factory hole was 2 1/2" I believe. If you go with the smaller hole, you'll have to fit the bellcrank up through the hole from the bottom, and then bolt it to the headlight housing above the inner fender. The advantage of the huge factory hole is that you can leave the bellcrank attached to the headlight housing and install it as a single assembly. Hope this made sense.
Indy Z11 Aug 10th, 06, 03:37 PM Are 67 inner fenderwells different between standard and RS or only 68-69 because of the vacuum headlights?
Marktat Aug 10th, 06, 05:02 PM There are no difference between the 67 rs and non rs.
MI68 Aug 13th, 06, 05:42 PM MI68, I never saw a template posted. If you want to draw one up, I'd be happy to host it online for members to download.
Check your email I just sent them to you.
shoddy_F-body Aug 13th, 06, 07:50 PM Anybody try the RS wheelhouses Ricks sells?
clwilcox33 Aug 13th, 06, 08:42 PM Here's the images that MI68 sent me, they look very helpful. I did shrink them down a little bit as they were very large in size. If anyone needs the larger versions I can put them up, but I think they are very good like they are now. I'll just link them so the page doesn't load too slow:
