I have an electrical gremlin in my 69 Camaro. First let me point out that my electrical skills are limited so any help would be appreciated.

This year I started having an issue where the interior lights would come on for no reason at times. I pulled the switch in the driver's door thinking that may be it but the lights stayed on even when I pulled the switch. Then when I slamed the door getting out of the car, the lights went out!

After the lights comming on and off several times over several days, I tracked the issue to near the glove box. I had a heavy coat in the passenger floorboard. When I hit the brakes after a drag run the coat slid forward and pushed underneath there and the lights came on. When I pulled the jacket out the lights went off. If they came on again, I could tap on the glove box (underneath) and the lights would go off.

Messing with the switch in the glove box didn't do anything. I guess I will pull the glove box and see what's back there but does anyone have any ideas what I should look for?

There is a single white wire running from the driver's door switch across the dash over to the passenger door switch. If this wire is grounded anywhere along its length it will complete the circuit and turn all courtesy lights on. I think you are on the right track. There might be a bare spot in the wire behind the glove compartment.

Yeah, like Larry says, you won't actually "short" the wire as it is a ground, not a power lead. So if you have a bare connection somewhere, you complete the circuit and the lights come on.

Just jiggle around up there and you should be able to spot the problem. It's pretty accessible, especially if you take out the glove box.
