View Full Version : Exhaust and the convertible crossmember

I have done some searching and seen some posts on here that some folks have gotten the Flowmaster American Thunder 2-1/2" exhaust to fit by the crossmember on 67-69 verts with minimal hacking/customizing. Is this true? I have a 69 Convertible that currently does not have the crossmember installed because the exhaust is right in the way. I can probably take it to a shop and get new pipes bent from the headers to the mufflers, but I would like to go to flowmaster mufflers anyway and am thinking about just getting the whole kit. My current exhaust is true duals- 2-1/2" from headers to mufflers, then 2-1/4" from mufflers to tailpipes. It is in good shape, I just can't get the crossmember to fit.

Does the Flowmaster kit have a crossover pipe?

What is the flowmaster part number for this kit (if it works...)?

Other exhaust systems/recommendations?

Thanks,
Andy

I assume when you say crossmember you are referring to the convertible only X-brace just rear of the trans.

I have heard of people getting away with minimal shimming on the FAT system, but never heard of it fitting without at least some. The reason is the crossover (H) pipe - it wants to occupy the same space as the drive shaft. (yes - the FAT kit has a crossover)

It is easily possible to get 2 1/2" pipes above the X-brace without a crossover pipe.

My solution to the dilemma was to make my own X-brace that goes ABOVE the exhaust pipes and BELOW the drive shaft. I installed a www.pypesexhaust.com X-pipe kit, and it fits just as it would on a coupe.

Yes, that is the brace I am refering to. I thought about a custom x-brace, but would like to try to use the stock one if it will work with minor shimming. Does the crossover tube need to be moved or re-located on the Flowmaster kit?

I have 2-1/2" exhaust on my car and use the factory "X" brace. I cannot help with the fit of the Flowmaster kit since mine is all custom bent.
