Hi all,

I have a 67 Camaro RS Convertible, was wondering of the 25,000 convertibles produced the first year how many are estimated to be still around?

Any sites that attempt to calculate estimate?

thanks

Okay people. Here's my realistic estimate, because I've thought of this question a number of times myself. I really, really think that ALMOST ALL the the convertibles have survived in one state of condition or another. What do I base this on? I've been messing with this "hobby" since the very early eighties. I used to go to junk yards all around. I NEVER saw a convertible sitting in a bone yard like a coupe. Even in 82 or so, I saw a "totaled" convertible that was just a shell. I asked the owner if it was going to the junk yard. He was a semi-small time 1st Generation restorer at the time & had already seen his share of convertibles. He said "Oh no. Its a convertible. I already have someone that is buying it, & wants to restore it." He said you won't ever see a convertible go to the junk yard. Now with ebay, even fewer will rust away in some private field somewhere. My guessimation is that over 90% are still around in one condition or another. I'll also bet that most will someday return to their former glory. I'd like to get the one they have listed below & make it a pro-touring car. I know I won't though, but I'll bet someone else does. Starting bid: $100.00 :)

Just a question - of the 25,000 RS quoted, does this include RS SS combos?

I have 2 RS Convert Camaros, 1 327 210 hp, with glide, the other 327, 275, 4 sp.

So, guess that makes 14 and 15 (only needed one shoe off so far).

Regards,

Bernie

OOPs, I noticed I missed the next page, my numbers are off and apologize for any confusion this has made....

I think the 90 % is a little high though, almost 40 yrs will have taken its toll. I would put the number closer to 50% - some would have simply been cut up to build another, unfortunately. Besides, have any of seen what our Canadian winters and salt on our roads can do to a car? Total devastation I am afraid. Just saved a 68 convert which was just about to be crushed.

Living in texas I could see your vision of 90% converts around but 2-3 hundred miles north many were gone in the late seventies from rust alone.
Many more were only good for parts cars before repops got into it. I have seen many in the feilds years ago with the tops gone and it was a fish bowl for the rest of its time. I can only guess that coastal cars were even worse off. Insurance co. have claimed many as totals as well in 37 years
My guess is less than 40% are still around, and with the percentage of cars that were verts in the 60s was low. If you have one your lucky is the way I see it.

Just went to Texas to get a 66 pickup - the frame was mint, love the truck. Agree with your assessment of 40%, we have a LOT more fishbowls / skating rinks up North here.

Food for thought on the numbers of survivors... I know guys with ragtop rockers, top frames, cocktail shakers, x-braces and other ragtop only items that are not repro sitting in their shops. When I was a teen we parted convertible as they were not perfered cars for drag racing or cornering. In the '70s and '80s convertibles were out of style and not being produced by most manufactures. Even on the coast (Santa Barbara) they just were not desirable used cars as drivers because they leaked, fogged up inside and were easy targets for theft.

As I said before there is no way to accurately come up with a number but my guess might be 20-30%. If there are a couple thousand '69 pace cars out there I sure don't see that many more '67 ragtops at the shows and events I attend to make me think there are thousands more of them out there...

There is absolutely no way that there are 90% of them left. I'd be surprised if there are 90% of the 4th generation Camaros left. I think Dennis is probably close at 20 to 30 percent and I wouldn't be surprised if the number was even lower than that.

Well if you're still counting I've got 5 myself, and I know I also cut one up about 20 years ago. And yes, I will be selling a 3 of them, but probably in spring.

Also, isn't that the traction bar mount brace in the floor in one of the pictures of the EBAY shell. I guess it was an RS/SS.

I guess count me in. Mine is an ss but I’ve added all of the rs parts to it. I remember seeing a 67 or 68 bare shell in a junkyard back in the early 70;s

Maybe y'all are missing what I'm saying a little bit OR I'm not making myself very clear. I'm saying 90% in one condition or another!! Not, convertibles that are worthy of car shows, or even drivable. That's why I put the link at the bottom of my post showing the basket case convertible. It will be bought & EVENTUALLY restored, depending on the competency, means & skills of the lucky winner. My guesstimating is going by my experience in Texas, yes. Convertibles were considered "classics" ALREADY when they weren't all that old. Shoot.... I remember guys standing around in the very early seventies talking about (& knowing) this guys 69 z28 was destined to be a "classic." The teenager that owned the Z28 was still making car payments on the car, & was the original owner. How many original Z28's were crushed at a junk yard??? I don't think too many. That's my opinion of the convertibles too. I think there are A LOT of basket cases still out there. Ebay is helping tremendously to keep them from returning to the dust (rust) of the earth. :) For years now, I have watched convertible after convertible after convertible sell on ebay, in classifieds, auto traders, car dealerships, etc. How many convertibles have to be out there in order to be listed "for sale" And yes, I know, some of the ones "for sale" today are the same ones I saw "for sale" perhaps 5 years ago or whatever. Too me, there seems to be NO shortage of 67 to 69 Camaro convertibles out there for sale, year after year, in every condition across the spectrum. :) I could be dead wrong. Only God knows how many convertibles are still out there but, there are just some things He likes to keep a secret. :)

No disrespect by this but there would be 1st gen convertibles stacked up in junk yards for the taking in any major large city if what you say were the case.

I was 18 in '74 and big time into Camaros and don't have the same recollection you do. They were old cheap cars and for the most part only 15-18 yr olds wanted them and drove them. By the end of the mid '70s you could buy a '69 Z/28 in real nice condition for $2000 and less if it showed signs of abuse. By the gas crunch you could buy a BB SS for less than a grand. With these cars in the hands of kids they were totaled and crushed. Valve covers, supercoils & dual point dist's, holleys & aircleaners, wheels and pioneer supertuners were all anyone worried about salvaging. If guys wanted twisted cars to fix up they got tri-5's and early Vettes. You got a Camaro because it was straight and cheap...

Anyway I know I can't expect what I remember to be the way it was everywhere and you can't expect what you remember to be the way it was 100% either. :beers:

Im with DJD on the guesstimate on how many are left. I say that 30 to 40% of the total made are still around. Back in the late 60s and 70s, they were just a good ole cheap car to thrash in, and boy, did we thrash and trash. And considering the rust issue with them, who knows. The ones that were wrecked, back then nobody re-built them, they were just a mode of transportation. I personally have cut up convertibles and have seen more cut up. The shell on e-bay, I'll bet it gets cut up, more money to be made there.

I seem to recall that the convertibles were fairly plentiful and cheap until all convertible production stopped. They all vanished and rarely came up for sale. Those that did were expensive even back then, or at least it seemed that way to me. I had a coupe but wanted a vert at that time. I think that the auto makers stopping convertible production saved a lot of them from getting thrashed and trashed.

Man "tobin67," that is ONE SWEET ride you have. I just LOVE a black on black on black 1st generation convertible. I really love the color of your "Z28" stripes too. The only thing that would make it better for me is if it had a RS package for the front grill. :) My car is soooo original & numbers matching & all, I'm kind of stuck with marina blue on blue with a white top. I'd LUV to have a black on black though. :) I'd kind of like to buy one of these "basket cases" I see on ebay all the time & fix it up the way I'd like it to be, a black of black convertible. :)

Thanks "327!275hp!Convt!" !

I have tried to keep the outside of the car as "original" looking as possible. Of course, once I pop the hood, all suspicion of originality is gone. I bought the car with a 454 with a lot of non-matching stuff so all hope of reverting it to original guts is about lost.

For me it was a dream to have one and it is a blast to drive. Objective achieved.

Well.. I don't mean to sound ungrateful & down on my car car. It was a fantastic find. I got it in a small town in New Mexico for only $8000.00 & it only had about 75,000 original miles on it. It even still had bias tires. Your interior & exterior look just like mine save the rally sport package on mine. I like the car a lot. The seller didn't even advertise that my car has the 275hp engine & original chrome dress up options under the hood. It was a REAL surprise the first time I poped the hood. I don't have any pictures. I have a digital camera but, I've never been able to figure out how some of these guys post their pictures (directly) onto this site. I'm a bit lazy when it comes to learning new computer tricks. But anyway... If I had my choice of original cars, I'd love a black on black. I think they just look extra mean & cool.

There are no stats for that I am aware of but if you use the % method which may be off by a dramatic amount. There may have been around 566 396 SS convertibles built which works out to be 11% of total convertible production. That would break down into 441 L35 SS cars (78%) and 125 L78 SS cars (22%) roughly. The problem with this method is you can't be quite sure of the totals.

While we are at it you can add in my three 67 verts, that would make 32 I beleve. 1967 RS 327 4 speed, RS/SS 350 4 speed, and RS/SS L78.

It's funny that you came up with that percentage method because I just did it that way the other day and came up with basically the same number that you did.I think your right too, the more I search for specifics on convertible big blocks the more I am realizing that GM didn't keep break down records of them.
