I'm intending to rewire the entire car. Any suggestions on wiring? Painless is a bit steep price wise. Is there anything else out there? My car actually has all the original wiring but in very poor condition. For safety sake, I'm going to redo it.

If it is all stock factory fit from amrican autowire fits great bought a set from Ricks for my convertible R/S and it was a easy plug and play deal. Not cheap but worth it. Painless has no plug ends and is not close to being like original (lot of work) my .02 cents

Buy the American Autowire set. You'll regret buying the Painless set. It's everything but painless from what I've read many times on here.

Painless is cheap compared to proper reproduction wiring, but still, if this is mostly a stock type car, repro wiring by American autowire or M&H is the way to go.
The painless system is a "universal upgrade" It converts the car to a more modern fuseblock and doesn't include many connectors, you have to cut and splice and put your old connecotrs on the new harness. The repro harnesses just go right in as factory.
A cheap alternative is to repair your existing harness. You can buy rolls of non stick tape. I redid mine, unwrapped it completely, cleaned all the wiresand connectors, replaced any bad terminals, added any needed new circuits, then retaped it. It looks and works like new, for just a few dollars.

if you know what your doing and the "universil harness" is the way you want to go. then summit makes a 18cir harness for a little over 200$ but let me warn you I just got finished rewireing my 85z with one of these took me 3weeks like he said anything but painless.

Hmmm, I'm pretty handy with tape... :clonk: Thanks for the input. I'm considering considering a CD player and possible satellite radio. Those would be the only two upgrades. Can the original wiring handle it?

My original harnesses were ugly but functionally sound. I unwrapped em, cleaned everything, replaced a few nasty terminals, cleaned the others with a tiny wire brush, added any additional wires (extra guages, 8 guage power lead for amps, no resister wire to ignition, stuff like that) I also scrounged replacements for some bad or missing "attachers", then wrapped it all in new non stick tape. It all looks and works like new.
My car had a 61 amp alternator, and I put in a Wells VR715 electronic regulator. This charging system is very adequate for me, only additional accessories are an MSD RTR distributor and a 600 watt stereo. I don't use electric fans tho.

I'm planning to do the same thing. This is one of the things that I can do inside the house when it's cold in the garage. You want to be sure to use non-stick tape or you will have sticky a mess down the road. Eastwood.com sells rolls.

Thanks for the input. Is there a part number for the AA harness? From what I see in the Rick's catalog, I have to order all of these seperately correct?

I have the comeplete wiring set from Painless I am extremely satisfied with what I recieved, I am having no problems at all installing the wiring although you do have to reuse some of the connectors, all of my connectors are in good shape, I just wanted to upgrade my wiring and add some extra circuits while I was at it. Besides it looks sharp when you peer under my dash and see the fuse block under there with all of it's new style fuses...............007

Thanks for the input. Looks like the credit card is going to determine if I reuse what I have....We did Painless on my husband's car, and I wasn't real impressed. It took forever. I could probably rewire my car with his left overs.

I was trying to come up with a quick and easy way for everyone to know what the tens of thousands of OEM replacement harnesses Factory Fit manufactures. So, in my effort to make this information easy, I created a "Years, Makes and Models" chart indicating what year harnesses we have for what cars & trucks. The list below is for our ORIGINAL RESTORATION product line only, if universal kits is what you want, they're pictured on the website - www.americanautowire.com.
Hopefully this helps some of you out when you start a new restoration project.
Thanks!
