'69 RS soon to be in my posession. The circumstances aren't favorable as the previous owner passed on and was a young guy...40 as I am. This will be my 3rd '69 and LAST...won't let this one go. Anyway, to the meaning of this submission. It's been sitting...long, 15 plus years. I know draining fluids, checking mechanics but is there some where I can reference to ensure I don't miss anything.

Appreciate the assistance...chevy folks are the best!

Joe, welcome to Team Camaro, if at all possible Id trailer it to your garage if I was you. Sitting that long, tires can be cord worn and might seperate while driving, fluids are all probably done in their usefullness, gears and engine parts probably dry and prone to damage on cold start.. but its up to you. If you can trailer home, then you can dismantle a little at a time and using fluids, bring it back to life slowly. Just my opinion but go slow. Also post the VIN and cowl tag data and tranny and axle codes in our Tag section and of course toss a few pics online here for us to see your new baby. :)

click makes some good points, 15 years in a barn is a long time. If you have to tho, it is a chevy, and given 5 gallons of fresh gas and a new battery, will most likely rumble to life. If you do have to drive it home, check the tires and the brakes very carefully first, wouldn't want your first cruise to be your last!

There have been several posts about dealing with cars and engines just like yours. Anyway, I would drain the oil, pull the filter, pull the plugs and check the radiater. Then I would replace the oil and filter and pull the distributer. Squirt a bunch of Marvel Mystery Oil in each cylinder. Pre-oil it a lot and then see if you can turn the engine by hand. Is so, reinstall the distributer and you are ready to check fire to the plugs. If that is good, siphon what gas you can out of the tank, add a bottle of Marvel Mystery Oil to the tank, pull the fuel line off after the pump and crank out a half pint or so. Hook the line back up, dump a little gas down the carb and it should fire up. It will probably smoke and make a lot of strange sounds and will more than likely leak some kind of fluid but that is okay because now it runs and you can take care of the rest when you get time. By the way, congratulations on your find.

Joe,

You don't list where you are from. In my neck of the woods (PNW) a barn car can develop some serious mold, mice and rust issues. Check the structure of the car over closely and I also agree about trailering it home and going over all mechanicals. Hope for the best but expect the worst is my motto. Good Luck on the resurrection :)

One very important part that ace brought up is mice. Did you ever here of Hantivirous? It is deadly and spread by mice. Use a spray bottle with 90% water and 10% Clorox and a respirater, the paper kind will work, and spray anywhere you see signs of mice...droppings, nests, etc.

Fellas, appreciate y'alls most excellent advice. I'm a details guy thus will probably go way overboard in prep and doc. Better safe, right? The wife and I will pack the Chevy truck and head to Warrenton, Virginia on the 10th of Dec. The new family member aka 69 RS will be trailered back to Warner Robins, GA. Nothing will move till greased and serviced for sure. Is this exciting or what?! :clonk:

The RS has been sitting in converted basement/garage...was a play on words with the unbarned thing. But, excellent advice deerhunter/ace...will take the precautions you mentioned. Jim, 5 gals of gas and a new battery is so true...Chevy's are so resiliant. Deerhunter, thanks for the low down on Marvel Mystery Oil. I will certainly do so.

Thanks for the welcome to Team Camaro...I appreciate the time you boys gave to this thread. My Pics/thoughts and actions to come after the RS retrievel next month.
