View Full Version : Going back to school...question
travis Nov 26th, 05, 06:25 PM How is state residency determined? Out of state tuition is always way higher than tuition for in state residents in state funded schools. I am planning on starting back to school in january up here in kansas since I work here, but my residence is still oklahoma. However, I actually spend more time in kansas than at home. Just trying to save a buck, thats all.
jacket Nov 26th, 05, 08:03 PM I don't know about your state. In Georgia and Alabama if your primary reason for being in the state is for education then you don't qualify for residency. In addition if you can not establish " independent " status and your parents live out of state you can not get residency status. They also have an age qualification which is about the same as independent status that can qualify the student for residency. You can probably go on line at the School's web site and find the qualifications. Sounds like you should be OK. Good luck.
pdq67 Nov 26th, 05, 08:58 PM Travis,
I think it is where you vote!
And glad to hear you are finally fed up with the crap to start a life change like I did when the old RR pi--ed me off back in the summer of '68!!
I figure it will tighten you up money-wise as well as that you will have loans to pay off, BUT I figure it is for the better!!
Been there, done that!!

Toby Keen Nov 27th, 05, 04:23 AM Travis, They're going to want to see your driver's lisense. You might want to think about a Kansas lisense.
On another matter, how's the golf swing coming along?
travis Nov 27th, 05, 06:19 AM Toby, the golf swing has come along very nicely. My father in law is just flat amazed :D I think that takes a heck of a teacher to teach someone how to swing a golf club over the internet :D
I figured it would come down to my drivers license being the final determination. I will dig into this further though as the cost difference is quite substantial.
Paul, yeah, completely fed up. We have some big layoffs looming in the near future and I'll be one of the 1st to go since I've only been with this company for about 1.5 years. Theres other big reasons too...mainly because my wife said so :D And the new "rambo manager" they hired a few months ago (I won't go there right now). My future with this company looks pretty dim...I plan on being a lot better prepared this time around.
radial72 Nov 27th, 05, 02:34 PM I *think* here in Kansas it's where you've filed your taxes... They really don't care too deeply about the driver's license thing...unless you get caught still using it years later (ask me how I know about THAT)... But a quick call to the university admissions department will clear things up in a hurry... They can be a bit of a bear here as I understand...since they've been sued over not allowing even those who have spouses in the military qualify...Kansas is ALL about money, and if they can charge you more they will...
pdq67 Nov 27th, 05, 02:57 PM Same thing here at UMC in town!!
They build, build, build and then raise, raise, raise the students costs!!! And the people up top keep getting bigger AND bigger salaries to boot!!!
I tell people to live at home and commute to a GOOD Community/Jr. College to get an Ass. in Ed. as a starter to get the basics out of the way!
Then transfer to a smaller regional school like what used to be known as a "Teachers" College and declare a major UNLESS you have to go to the University b/c you want a certain degree that isn't offered other places.
I just hate to see kids and a lot of times, their working class parents, get hit with, a lot of times, 5-1/2 years of full college EXPENSES that most times takes years AND years to repay!!!
Both my wife and I have been there AND done that!!
That's one reason I don't have much use for somebody that sits around and bi-ches that they didn't have the chance ta go to school!! B/S, we did it the hard way!! My Mom, bless her heart helped a bit, but all in all, it took us over 12 years ta pay all our student loans back!!

PS., you can probably tell that I don't have much use for the "Business" of education!! It should be "teach the kids" instead!! To me, it falls into the same catagory as the "Business" of Gov. and the "Business" of some Organized Churches too!!
Codi Nov 28th, 05, 10:33 AM Home is where you lay your head. I lives here but I stays there. Just take some form of proof of your KS address. Rent reciept, utilities, etc. In your name of course.
George1968327 Nov 28th, 05, 10:52 AM It does seem to matter where you live - at the University that I work at you will need to prove that you actaully lived in the state for two years before you are considered a resident. I think someone already pointed out - where are you paying taxes?
