OK – I came up with this one many many years ago, and just this past year finally came up with the correct answer. I asked my best friend, who happens to be a math teacher, and he had some ‘crazy math answer’, but not a true number. See if you can come up with a real time… Its one of those ‘a car is driving from point A to B type questions’
A car is sitting at point A at a dead stop. DO NOT account for: 1. Friction 2. Wind speed or 3. The effort to gain speed. Point B is exactly 60 miles away. For the first mile the car goes exactly 60 miles an hour. As its front wheels cross the next mile marker from, its speed automatically (instantaneously) drops to 59 miles an hour. The car continues to drop its speed, matching the number of miles left, until on the last mile the car drives 1 mile an hour. At point B, when the front wheels cross the ‘finish’ line, the car comes to an immediate halt.
How long would it take to drive the 60 miles?
Hint: The first mile takes a minute; 60 MPH for 1 Mile (you can cover 60 miles in one hour, and there are 60 minutes in an hour, so 1 Mile (1/60th of the time) is 1 Minute))
The last mile will take an hour to drive, obviously, 1MPH and driving 1 Mile means it will take an hour.
Round off - Hours / Minutes / Seconds, no tenths of a second or anything ;)
