View Full Version : 1969 Copo Camaro's
68Baldwin Nov 29th, 05, 06:13 AM I notice on some Yenkos and other Dealership Copos that sometimes the front Grill is Argent silver and then sometimes the Black grill was used like on the SS models. What is proper, should they be All argent silver? Does a X-11 Copo change it to a Black Grill since it has the exterior chrome package...Dan

William Nov 29th, 05, 11:17 AM COPO or X11 has nothing to do with grille color.
std car
non-SS, argent with bow-tie. Includes COPO; Yenko removed the bow-tie.
Z/28, argent with Z/28 emblem
SS, black with SS emblem except factory black cars. Those received an argent grille with SS emblem.
headlamp bezels always match grille color
RS
All were black with the appropriate emblem except factory black cars. Those were argent.
On both grilles the area outside the chrome trim is body color.
68Baldwin Nov 29th, 05, 07:45 PM Bill,So Basically what your saying is All 1969 Copo 427 Camaros should have argent silver grills except for the RS 1969 Copo 427 Camaros that were black?? Dan

68Baldwin Nov 30th, 05, 05:44 AM Thanks Guys.Hoers 69 Yenko Camaro looks to have a Black grill, not a RS car.Theres a topic that was started the other day on the SYC about a collection of parts and cars found, guy died and sister sold the stuff.Shows a 69 Yenko with a black grill, non RS car too..Jeff,Thats the Malchom Konners RS car with the New Jersey Copo plates.I noticed the vinyl roof is the Halo type roof, dosen't connect all the way to the drip rails, about of 1/2 paint showing on the roof. Was this factory or was that done at the Malchom Konners dealer? Real nice highly optioned car by the way!! Malchom Konners was big into HIPO Corvettes and sold Copo Camaros,Chevelles and even a few 70 Yenko Dueces.Their Copo's were not the Standard Copo, had some real neat options!! Theres a white Copo in Sweden with a enduro Bumper,Am/FM radio,Factory tach and 4spd console with gauges. This body number is 3x3000 and the above RS Copo above is 3X3001.There was a highly option Copo just rediscovered in NJ with a 3X3005.Dan
KevinW Nov 30th, 05, 07:26 AM Dan, factory 69 vinyl tops look like the blue one in the pic. Dealer and pre 68s would go to the drip rail and down the A piller.
So what COPO was found in NJ? :)
click Nov 30th, 05, 07:27 AM The 69 vinyl roofs were all that way from factory, they left a lip of body color between the vinyl and drip edge. Due to that when I replace my vinyl top, I had to repaint the whole dang rear end from the back of the doors all the way around including trunk and rear 1/4's dang it :(
68Baldwin Dec 1st, 05, 05:47 AM Hi Kevin,Go to the Dick Harrell site and you will find the info,Look under "Found My Copo"...Dan
KevinW Dec 1st, 05, 05:54 AM Dan, Found it! Good luck on bringing your old car back to life! There is another copo in NJ with deluxe int BTW. :)
Mark C Dec 1st, 05, 10:28 AM Bill,So Basically what your saying is All 1969 Copo 427 Camaros should have argent silver grills except for the RS 1969 Copo 427 Camaros that were black?? Dan
Not necessarily. Yenko had to order X66 and X22 cars early on to get the L72's installed. Those would have a black grille. Once he figured out how to order them as X11 or X44 then they would have had the Argent silver grille.

Absolutely not true.
There many original photos of the first batch of Yenkos and none had a black grille. Only 10 of the 1st run of fifty were Olympic gold, one of them tested by Super Stock magazine. There are also many period photos of their in-house race car. I believe all of the first batch, VINs N578xxx-N579xxx, were X66 due to Fisher body scheduling them as RPO Z27, then "deducting" the SS badges.
HawaiianCamaro Dec 1st, 05, 01:32 PM That COPO RS is this sites own LVCAMARO (Steve Sandlin) and the the one thats 1 body number away is COPO Anders from the sYc site. He was at SCR8 looking over this COPO RS intensely and had mentiond his car and Streves were 1 number apart. Heres some more pics of Steves COPO.
