View Full Version : Rear Shock Installation Question

I'm replacing my rear shocks for my 68 camaro w/ mono leaf spring. My current shock attaches to the shock mount upper plate using 2 screws. Not sure how to describe the piece that's part of the shock that that allows the spring to be bolted to the rear spring plate, but it's similar to how the front springs attached to the bottom control arm. Here's my question - when I went to NPD to pick up a spring, the KYB springs looked more like what my front springs looked like. Here's a picture as an example (look at the picture for KYB-KG5524):

Can I use this type of spring? Does the bolt portion simply "poke" through the middle hole in the upper shock mount plate and attached? Or do I need to find the correct spring? KYB says I need KG5524. Here's the link as an example: http://www.performancecenter.com/autoparts/kyb/shocks_-_vehicle_specific/kybkg5524.html.

If anyone knows, does this spring actually come w/ that piece that allows the it to be attached to the upper shock mount plate? Or do I have to someone re-use this same piece from my old spring?

Thanks for the help.

The shock on a 68 has a threaded stud at the top, which pokes thru the shock mounting plate into the trunk, it's secured by a double nut.
The bottom end on a mono leaf car is just a bushed hole that fits between the 2 ears on the lower spring plate, and is secured by a thru bolt and nut.

The 5524 seems to be the correct application, it says the pics are "representative" and may not show that actual shock.

Sounds like you just removed the upper shock plate with the shock still attached. Just unbolt the old shock from the plate and mount it on the new shock and then bolt the plate back in place...

The "stud" at the top of the shock I'm replacing is not the same as KYB's 5524 shock. The upper shock mount plate has a whole in the center that doesn't look to be threaded and is an inch or so in diameter. If the threaded stud on the KYB 5524 shock is inserted into this hole, the "washer" that's in the picture is not going to be large enough to attach it. The shock I'm replacing attaches a little differently and uses the 2 threaded holes on the upper shock mount plate on each side of the larger hole I mentioned above. I just can't seem to find a replacement just like the one I'm replacing, and the dang KYB 5224 shock has me baffled on how to install. Make sense? Could my shock plate mounts be altered? They look to be in good shape, but who knows what the guy before me may have done.
