i have a 11 a build date with a x 77 d 80 code on my late style trim tag
my vin # is 124379n558xxx some things i have read say this tag was used on norwood cars built after vin #544000 starting around mid-nov.1968,other things i have read and people i have talked to lead me to believe this is not the correct trim tag for the car PLEASE HELP!

11A is too early for an N558xxx VIN. Should probably be 12A or 12B, but there still probably wouldn't be an X code on the tag. Post a pic of the tag and I'm sure someone here will be able to help you out. Also, check to make sure the partial VIN under the cowl panel matches the VIN on the dash.

The only time and 11A car would have an X77D80 code on their trim tag would be if the car was assembled in November of 69. A November of 69 car would have a very high 600000, or low 700000 VIN number.

Would appear you have a swapped VIN or trim tag on the car. As a start, if the car has straight headrests the trim tag has probably been swapped and the VIN is right, if it has angled headrests the VIN has been swapped and the trim tag is probably correct.

Need more info on casting and assembly dates from components on the car to tell whats up.

looked for a partial vin# under the cowl panel no numbers are there ,as far as casting # and date codes there is no engine or trans in the car.

Mark I looked at a 10B of 69 a couple weeks ago with what I thought was an orig tag and no X code. I'm suppose to go back and get a pic. of the tag when I get time. It had a 704XXX vin. CRG says it happened a few times from the info. they have

Yep it does happen, I've seen numerous cars made post 12B of 68 without an X code, but I've never seen it happen on a Z28.

There should definitely be a hidden VIN under the cowl panel(panel where wipers come through). Post a picture of the tag but it sounds like a tag swap or the wrong VIN for the car.

Couldn't see mine, took the cowl panel off and took the paint off with a 3m rol-loc disc... ta-da there it was!

I've seen it a few times myself, but that's not the issue in this case. He has 9N558XXX with an X code. Mark, has the CRG ever seen an X code prior to 12B?

That's a tough one. I don't have any advice for you, but I'm sure many others have been through it. I'd recommend you search the archives.

One thing that may help is to look at the driver's door, if it's original to the car. There were two designs. Here's an example of an early one:

This car was on ebay a while back.
The later design has two horizontal ribs to the left of the upper door latch screw as a place for the GM conforming sticker, and came into use sometime around August '69 I think.

after looking into the heater box area i did find the partial vin # and it does not match with the vin on the dash, looks like the trim tag is correct from the 11-a build date vs the partial vin #that i found, does any one know what my options are at this point(can i get the correct vin# or a new vin# issued)

Not many reasons a different VIN would be on a car. Stolen comes to mind first.....
I'd take it back to the seller......

I would take it back quickly and if you don't get your money back call the police. I bought a 64 Corvette coupe and spent all winter stripping it and the next spring here comes the State Police in my driveway wanting to see the vette I had bought. Thank goodness when they checked the vin on the frame it matched. I asked them what would have happened if it had been stolen. They told me I could have been charged with receiving stolen property at the least. I always check every number I can before money changes hands anymore. Good Luck...

i just got off the phone with information from the state police ,i asked them to run the hidden vin #,and it came back with no records found(not stolen) what they said could happen is the dmv may issue a new title with both vin #'s ,that would be good news to me because the hidden vin#710xxx and my 11-a build date would be correct . i will keep you posted on the outcome.
thank's

While talking to many old time dragracers and trying to find info on their cars this is what I found out.Cars that were pretty much racecars early in life were sold, but sometimes thru passage of time and owners the titles were not forwarded to the new owners. Then one day the current owner wants to put it back on the street ,but has no title. So maybe these cars are revined with another title, but the original car was never stolen. Is it right, has it been done?? Another thing I learned with 68 Novas and Camaros, these guys would change the vin number to 69 for a class that they wanted to run.I can tell you twice I found a old 68Nova dragcar that had a 68 title but 69 vin number on car.One guy went so far as to cut the original 68 Dash out (68 Novas had 1 Year only Dash) and put a 69 dash in it.Then didn't offer the L89 option in the 68 Novas but did in 69.I have info and pictures on both these cars but didn't buy them.So sometimes saying a car with a changed vin number is automatically Stolen is not true.Just my 2 cents.....Dan

Just curious, but why would the police stop by your house. Do they have nothing better to do than to canvas cars under restoration with the outside chance that one might be stolen. Isn't that paramount to canvasing house to house, looking for drugs, or illegal aliens, or God forbid, removed matress tags!

how about a illegal alien,driving a stolen Chevy truck,filled with drugs,with a forged drivers liscense ,speeding.....LOL....
