Hey guy's,
On Mrs. 69's 95 FireChicken (V6), the temp gauge hits above 240 and all the lights and bells start going off in the dash. The cooling fans kick on but the temp keeps rising.... The upper Radiator hose is cool to the touch and the bottom is a bit hotter (still cool to the touch) First thought is a thermostat?
Thanks,
Mr.69
ps If it is a Headgasket I'm trying to prepare her for a 5.7!

i would think its a thermostat due to the fact that the upper hose is cool. the thermostat is no letting the coolant circulate.

I'd say you are right, thermostat. Certainly the first place to start anyway.

Thanks for the quick response guys.
That was my first thought so off I go to the autoparts store.
Darn! I was kinda hoping for a 5.7 for that slug.

If you'd rather have the 5.7 I'm sure you could talk her into it without too much trouble. :D

Very bad news....as I was changing the thermostat, I pulled the upper radiator hose and no coolant spilled out...hmmmm?.....Took off the radiator cap, no Antifreeze...strange?....Pulled the oil dipstick....Chocolate milk!, After telling her the bad news about possibly the head gasket, I did say I have good news, she said "What could that be?", I said "I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to Geico!"
Why is it much funnier on the commercials? Mrs69 found no humor in that one.
I've been doing some internet search and I heard these 3.4 motors has intake manifold gasket that leak....we'll find out tomorrow.

I've done some work on my sons '94 Camaro 3.4 and all I can say is have at it. One of the valve cover gaskets is leaking and the intake has to come off just to get to it. These newer cars are great but you have to pay the price so to speak when it comes time for the repairs. Good luck with yours.

The repair shop said this type of motor does not have that "lower" manifold gasket, soooo....Headgaskets for the Fire Chicken! Merry Christmas to me! oops I mean Happy Holiday's to me!

Have you checked the Air/Fuel ratio? Might be running to much air I believe that will heat an engine up pretty quick. Also try running it without the thermistat or better yet drilling the thermistat out so it has about the same flow rate as if it was open.. (I believe if there is too little resistance the water will not be able to pick up the heat and the cooling system will not perform correctly)

Well the heads are off and the headgaskets look great!....Big crack in #1 cylinder wall, I can't win....I don't get it, The car is 10 years old with 79,000 miles... Oil and fluids are changed religiously on this car and this is what I get in return!
Now I'm in search for a long block which I hear is rear for this car.....
BTW Mrs.69 still not going for the 350 motor....
