View Full Version : Any way to make master cylinder look new?

My master cylinder is not very old, but it has a little rust appearance to it. Is there any way to clean off the rust with the M/C on the car? I bought some stuff called "Evapo-rust" but am hesitant to use it unless I hear someone say it works without destroying anything.

I have other fittings which also appear a little rusty and would love to clean them up too.

Any suggestions would be appreciated................

One of the paints made to look like cast metal should. Work. My master and steering gear were done this way.

A great resto technique I discovered for raw metal parts is as follows: Use Dupont metal conditioner (blue-green) Keep the part wet and use either steel wool or wire brush to remove the rust. When the rust is gone, wipe off the part, then rinse with water. Next step is to use a wire brush on a drill on the metal. At this point, the steel should look almost new. Wipe everything down, then spray some clear paint on to lock in the look. It beats the heck out of cast blast paint . It looks like raw metal just like original. Some cast iron paint looks cheesy IMO.

i have seen the"Dupont metal conditioner (blue-green)" at the local ace hard ware last week. might wanna check your local hardware store

Eastwood sells a rub on conditioner for exhaust manifolds to renew and retain the cast iron look. I haven't used it, and I don't know if you can use it for other rough cast parts like a MC. Might be worth a look though...

This is exactly the way I do it.
you can use some ospophoric acid - found at the hardware store to make it go faster. Called OSPO
Just wire brush till it is as clean as you can, and spray with satin clear.
It will look exactly the way it should - NATURAL.

Use the OSPO instead of the dupont (I think that is what the dupont is anyways)
OSPO costs a fraction of the price. Just do it in steps. Don't hurry.

The clearcoat prevents the metal from rusting.
However brake fluid will ruin the paint.
So as long as the paint stay's clean - there won't be any rust.

You can re-clear from time to time still on the car.
Just mask off the area all around to prevent any overspray.

It could last forever.
I have one I did 12 years ago, looks the same now as it did back then.

This process works on eXHAUST manifolds too. - just use super high temp paint.

Important Note: Don't paint the inside of your master cylinder.
If you sand blast it, Make sure all openings are completely sealed.
A grain of sand in the brake fluid could posibly cause stopping problems.

Thanks for the info! I'm glad to hear you've had one last for 12 years. I'm trying to decide whether to use this process on all the bare metal parts, leaf & coil springs, spindles, tie rods etc... I just want to be sure that rust don't start forming under the clear in a few months! That would be a bummer!!

Just make sure the surfaces are very clean.
Use satin for parts that should be flat, and high temp for everything else.

As far as I am concerned it is the ONLY way to go.
The parts were originally natural finish, not painted.
If you paint something it looks painted. This is the closest thing to no paint.

If you applied nothing, it would be rusty again in 3 days.

I used a product called Glisten from the POR 15 company,. It worked great. Used it on my aluminum itake manifold etc as well. It is a 2 part paint - it has a hardener.

I have never heard or read of a CLEAR paint applied over blasted/cleaned bare steel that doesnt still allow corrosion to start forming again.
If not trying misc clear paints, BOESHIELD is the best rust inhibitor for bare metal, but would need periodic updating................
